Hi There

i wish to upgrade my 9800gt, which card should i go for out of the two as both same price so I am a little confused.

thanks for your help

i mainly play black ops and am looking forward to BF3!

cheers

At the same price the 5850 would be better card as it is around 10% faster than the 6850. However, you would also have to factor in things like overclocking (if you are the kind of person would or would like to squeeze extra performance out of the card), as 5850 that are not MSI/Asus or reference model will not be able to voltage tweak for higher overclock and so the overclocked 6850 would be compariable speed at lower power consumption (6850 only require 1 PCI-E connector, whereas 5850 require 2). Crossfire wise, pair of 6850 will be on par with pair of 5850, because the Crossfire scaling is better on the 68xx series than then 58xx series.

Sidenote: you would most likely get better frame rate in Black OPs by overclocking your CPU than at stock speed after you upgrade your card, as the game is highely CPU dependent.

I have done research into this and I can say I've discovered 5850's are more powerfull than 6850's, however 6850's will overclock a lot more and will perform faster when Crossfired.

6850's are considerable cheaper so I am heavily considering buying one too, however the 5850 are very very capable single cards out of box.

Hope this helps you.

None of those are true, for example a 6870 is nothing like a 5770 lmao, I don't know where the in heaven you get your information from lol.
i wasn't saying about performance..

amd changed the 5800 to 6900, and 5700 to 6800..

understand now.? if not do some research

To be honest, if you are stretching the budget to £200 range, you should consider getting the Gigabyte GTX480 SE while it is on 10% off offer:

...assuming that you got a good enough PSU (a decent 600W or above).

Out of the box, it is faster than the 6970 and GTX570, BUT it does have higher power consumption. Also, it has better performance gain on overclocking than the 6970, if it is something you'd do.

Don't bother with the 6950 unless you are flashing it to a 6970...and even then, the GTX480 is still faster.

Still cant see your point, assuming your making one. this thread is about information regarding performance (because OP wants to play BF3) if he wanted to know about ATI name branding he would have asked.

Btw I'm well very informed in Ati 5xxx to 6xxx cards.

Of course you are.

Gareth170 was pointing out the perfectly legitimate, and true, point about how ATI/AMD have redone their card naming schemes. The 6870 is the 5770 'equivalent' in their new gpu range. I don't know what your point/problem is...

it's totally simple

6850 is 'equivalent' to 5750. 6950 is 'equivalent' to 5850 .. so a 5850 would have course be faster than a 6850 (5750 'equivalent' )

oh and it's AMD not ATI
