6850 vs Gtx460

I've always had Nvidia card's, I guess its the same reason ive been married to the same woman for 19 year.

Oh gawd.... my last cards have been X1900XT, 8800GT, HD4870, GTX460.

What does that say for the longevity of my (currently 2-year) marriage? :eek:

Anyway, back OT, I went for the GTX460 because there was so little to choose, I found a nice deal on a 460 and I quite fancied seeing what the PhysX fuss was about. Currently glad I did since my card is overclocking very nicely and I do quite like the PhysX in Batman. I'm now hoping for more PhysX games, though, whereas before I tended to avoid them because of the stupid proprietary nature of it (that's me being fickle again... must buy the wife some flowers... still love, still love...)

TBH Physx is what's tempted me to step over to the N-word once again, I just don't know about that image quality though. Think I may opt for the 6850.

Hmmm... don't know much about IQ with Red v Green these days.

I do know I was getting more flickering textures with my 4870 than I'm currently seeing, but then I was never much one for updating graphics drivers once I'd found something stable, so it could just have been a driver issue.

Just picked up 2x 2GB GTX460s (yes both are 2GB) for £180 on MM :)

Also I've never had a preference between ATi/nVidia:

FIRST: 9800 Pro AIW (first ever self installed gpu :) )
-> 8800Ultra (stupid OTT card!)
-> GTX260 (died after I spilt a pint on it)
-> HD4850 (quick replacement for 260)
-> HD5770 (great little card, just sold it to housemate)
-> 2x 2GB Palit GTX460 Sonic in SLI; GPU hunger satisfied! :D

Meh - if you hadn't gone for those GTX 460s I was ready to snap them up. Great value.

I've not had a real problem with ATI or nVIDIA drivers in years. Not a crash in game since I got my HD4850 unless I was tinkering.

People are blaming video card drivers when something else is wrong with their rig.

Soundcard drivers are another matter. Asus, C-Media, Realtek and Creative have all given me problems in the last few years. Thank goodness for modders...

+1 entirely

All these people claiming ATi drivers suck either a) have a poorly set up system or b) dont have a problem but just like spouting what everyone else says

I have also used both over the years and the only ever time I had an issue was when fallout3 got first released, had to wait a whole 2 days for ATi to do an update, damn them

Hmm... Video cards since I got married? 9500Pro, 6600GT, 6800GT, X1800XT, 8800GT, HD4850. 6 Years in.

Getting harder to justify stuff since we started paying nursery fees though.

Personally I'd go with the 460. Performance-wise there's not much in it and ATi are no longer embarrasing NVidia when it comes to power draw/heat. The 6850 has the slight edge in performance, but the 460 supports Cuda, 3D and PhysX and is about to be replaced by the 560 (hopefully resulting in a bargain 2nd card for SLI).

maybe not now on the 5 series NVidia but their 4 series still draw the same power and output the same heat now as on initial release
Cuda is only useful for specialist apps, which OP hasnt mentioned, also no mention of 3D and for PhysX to be properly utilised ( in the 3 games that support it) you are best having a 2nd dedicated card so thats not really an argument either, I think the whole "I prefer NVidia to ATi" is more convincing tbh
