Ok so I'm in the mood for an upgrade (apologies for another Radeon 6 series thread!). Currently I use an Asus 5770 512mb, which has been great so far, but I'm after something with more grunt since I game at 1920x1080.

My motherboard is crossfire compatible, and I was tempted to get another 5770, but the 512mb VRAM would be a bit too limiting for crossfire I feel. I have been looking at the OcUK VTX3D 6870 1024mb which is on preorder offer for £119.99. This looks pretty good and was thinking of getting one now and then another later in the year or next when the 7 series come out, as the prices should be even lower. However, I keep seeing things about 1024mb VRAM being just enough for 1080p. Ideally, I would like to get something that is future-proof enough for BF3, Skyrim and what not (obviously its impossible to predict performance in games not out).

Then I seen the 6950 2048mb on offer for £199.99 (or £5 more for the MSI). This looks even better, but of course the price is a fair jump up from the 6870 offer. Looking at Anandtech benchmarks, the FPS increase is decent, but is it enough for the extra ££? I could sell the DiRT 3 code as I already have it, so I could get back maybe an extra £10 or so on it if that makes a difference (hint hint OCUK, give me a discount code ;)).

Both options would give me a nice performance boost, but I was wondering what you guys think of the current situation. I know I could just wait around for the 7 series, but for the current prices it seems like a good time to upgrade.

Im in a similar situation, Iv been looking at 6870 crossfire which only recently seems to have had its drivers sorted out, no complaints from many many people and it seems like an unbelievable price for performance ratio. The 6870 crossfire is practically between a 5970 and a 6990, not too far off a 6990 mind you.

Hopefully some people with a 6870 crossfire setup will post their views on them.

I would jump on the 6870 right now, but the 1Gb of VRAM worries me. Crossfiring them would be great, but again, the limitation of 1Gb VRAM plays on the mind.

It seems many people have said " Only time I have noticed ram limitations with the 6870's was at 2560x1600 with 8xAA and everything maxxed in a couple games."

Hmmm, it certain is a pickle. Keep going to buy the 6950, but then backing off as I'm not sure the performance difference is large enough to warrant the price increase.

The endless cycle of buying components :(

I pondered over a 6870 or spend £90 more on a 6950. Considering my budget, the rez and the games I play I went for the 6870 and I'm more than happy with it. I don't plan to xfire but doing so would breeze through almost any game.

What is your resolution? And was the 1gb vram enough for the AA on most games?

1080p, I dont bump AA all the way up because I dont see any difference in image quality above 4x or so and I get solid 60fps. Racing games are my main thing and it plays Dirt3 and Shift2 at max details. With Metro and the like it will obviously stuggle but it looks and plays beautifully on high anyway.

If you're someone who absolutely has to have everything maxed out then the 6950 with extra 1GB may be better.
