6870 and 6850 launch 18th oct

Could be correct but seems strange why they would change the naming scheme. Maybe its a plan to show the 6870 to be a large improvement over the 5770. Also keeps all the mid-high end cards the same number 68**. Wonder what pricing will be.

Well the specs stated in the link for the 6870 are a fair bit down from what was reported in the other thread, if it comes in at 460 price which it should then it will still be a decent card but not amazing, a 460 is not that far of a 5850 TBH.

It's looking more like the 6970 will be a 1920 stream processor part if the 6870 specs are correct, which will put it's performance more in line with an overclocked 480.

According to nordichardware the 5750/5770 replacements will be now named the 6850/6870, meaning the 5850/5870 replacements should be now named the 6950/6970, what do they call the dual GPU card.....

I'm inclined to believe nordichardware, the previous reported specs was too good to be true, these are much more realistic.

if true then why are some sites reporting it to be delayed till november ? , will keep my 5870 for the true replacement lol
This appears to be a bogus story. The announcement was resceduled to October 18th (from the 12th?) but that was never going to be the actual launch date.

The actual launch date (when you can buy the cards) has never been announced, and therefor could not have been delayed. It was probably always scheduled to be sometime in November.

It's FUD basically.

this is bs they going for nvidia famous tactics rename the (aka 8800gts). 6870 slower then 5870 ... if its true i see the hate train shifting from nvidia to amd/ati.

There's no way they'd do that though. Whetever is branded as a 6870 you can be sure it will be faster than the 5870. As you say, to anything else would be idiotic.

The naming scheme make sense from the cards they will have,
the 100us and down bracket will soon go away due to cpu graphics with SB and such.

so, 6850 covers 150-200 and down, 6870 200-250 or so.
then, cayman comes with new 6990 or such numbers.
the new high end series and then anthilles.

Cant understand why people be upset by numbers of the cards.
the industry is changing all the time and the future shows low end will go away.
a good card will reside around the 200 us range, which is a segement amd is targeting with the 6800 series.

That's what I was thinking I won't be impressed with AMD if they go down this route of trying to confuse buyers with new performance segments for the numbering scheme i.e if I buy a 6870 I would naturally expect it to be faster then a 5870 not slower. Then again a lot of this will depend on pricing; if the 6850/6870 is being built to take the GXT460 head on then I won't be expecting it to cost more then £180.

If the source is correct then the replacement for the 5770 will be called 6870. :o

Does this mean there will be no dual GPU card? seeing as how all the top end single GPU's are in the 69xx bracket?

EDIT: ah no, so 6990 will be the replacement for 5970 presumably.
