6870 BSOD HELP

You know what I reckon it is your power supply, I was using a Hiper 630w and my 6870 wouldnt work at all in fact the PC would not even boot! Since you have a 500w and not a major brand I think you should seriously try to get a better power supply, I got one today as I just recently purchased a 6870 but my card turned out to be faulty :-(

The website says the minimum power supply should be 500w, but considering the kind of setup people have these days with that kind of graphics card I would say 600w or higher of a well known reliable brand like OCZ or Corsair.

Aha, thanks for that, atleast that kind of proves my card isn't fully faulty, since your computer wouldn't even boot.

I will invest with a 750w psu after I finish this windows install and test it with newest drivers again

17A on the 12V rail is quite poor for a 500W PSU.

17A gives 204W which is less than a decent 300W PSU would provide.

The HD 6870 on its own needs around 140W which leaves very little for the rest of your system.

It seems even more likely now that it's the PSU.

You don't need a 750W PSU. And gain not all 750W PSU's are created equal.

Unless you plan on Crossfire, or using the PSU again in a new build, a good 500W unit will be plenty.

This is only improving my day, the higher the chance its the PSU the easier to fix :)

If you're just after the minimum PSU to run what you have now then this:

Lepa N-Series 500W Power Supply

408W on the 12V rail and 2 power connectors for the HD 6870.

If you want something a little more upmarket then this:

Lepa W-Series 500W '80 Plus' Power Supply

408W on the 12V rail and 2 power connectors for the HD 6870. More power efficient than the "N" Series, so will use less electricity, and a longer warranty.

Lepa are the budget range of Enermax who make very high quality PSU's.

If you want a more powerful PSU for Crossfire, or future upgrades, then post back.

You need to remove the link as it's against the forum rules.

That's just another of those PSU's making claims far beyond what they can deliver.

You're much better off buying a decent quality 500W PSU that a crappy "750W" one.

If you want a PSU to run what you have now then look at the ones I linked to.

If you want a PSU for Crossfire or future upgrades then you need to set your sights higher than a £30 odd "750W" one.

The PSU is the one thing it's not advisable to skimp on.

Will this 500W PSU definitely be able to handle my system? If it can 100% run my computer i will buy it and it says it only has one pci-e 8 pin :S

I had the exact same problem with my 6850, just load into windows with no drivers then install the drivers through windows not ccc and it will work. Strange i know but chances are that will fix it, worked for me :P

Mate if you got the money just future proof it with a PSU that is higher than 500w, later on you may decide to add more stuff or upgrade and go SLI/Crossfire, in this case get a 750W, I got a Corsair TX750 sure its £93 but damn well good PSU and enough power to last a long time. Or if thats too pricey get a 600W OCZ.
