Hi everyone

iv been (im)patiently waiting for the 7xxx series of cards, but have to admit i wasnt expecting the prices of the 79 series to be so high (but understand why AMD have pitched them at this point - wouldnt we all if we could?).

I am aware that the 7700 series should hopefully be here in the next week or so, however, iv noticed that OC are offering 6870s for as low as £126 this week and am tempted. I have a 4870 at present and to be honest its still performing acceptably. I mainly play the likes of skyrim, BF3 single player (that one does chug along a bit) and the numerous COD game at 1920 on my monitor, or at 1280 * 720 when outputting to my projector. Looking at the anandtech bench, i will pretty much double my framerates with the 6870, which seems like a great deal for £126.

Do you think the 1gig of memory will be an issue shortly, compared to say the 2gig version of the 6950 series?

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Ian

if you game at 1920 x 1080 or less then 1gb is fine.

I would wait to see if there is a 7870 or whatever the equivalent is to the 6870/6970 and see how much it is. bide your time till the 7xxx line up is out.

Paitence, unfortunately.

If you buy a 6870 now and a 7870 or whatever comes out for £130-£140 ish then you will feel a bit silly?

Hmm - yes, very wise words - would feel a bit miffed if within the next few weeks new tech came out that was better performing for same / similar price - you know how it is though when your wallet has been twitching for the last 6 months. With the pricing strategy at present, i do wonder where the 7870 / 7850 will be sitting price and performance wise compared to the 6870 / 6950 brackets.

Thanks for the reply

Ian

Just bide your time, we all want upgrade NOW, and it's a pain in the arse... however, there is a limit of waiting, if it's say 2 weeks, wait... if it's 2 months, man you'll miss out on gaming... I can't be arsed waiting myself

lol..your funny.:p

You'll be looking at £200 for the 7870.

It's perfectly obvious that AMD are no longer giving you faster cards without having to pay for the privilege thesedays...

it was mere conjecture and a reason to wait other than an observation or fact.

Hence the 7870 or whatever.

okay for the fact police who seem to be working overtime today.

(this is better Cooper/dave beast? Sheesh!)

Thanks for the replies everyone

just been thrown another googly while looking in the graphics card forum - a 2 gig 6950 for £170 !!! what about that then?

I am really tempted at this - surely this would keep me going at 1980 / 1280 for ages

cheers

Ian

If you can't wait its a good buy, would last for ages too. It doesnt say but might be worth asking if it is one that can be flashed to a 6970.

At a guess i'd say (based on previous gen) that the 7850 will be around £150, and the 7870 around £200

Im hanging in there for a 7870 personally. Been waiting since November, can taste it! Hopefully its not silly prices.
What if it comes out at £200 notes and probably won't be any faster than a 6950, that's my worry for you? Bear in mind here, the 7970 standard is what, between 25-60% faster than a 6970 depending on what games, and the 7950 less so... so a gen down and for £200 wouldn't surprise me if it's actually slower or the same as a current 6950?

Actually building a PC for my mate on Friday and he will just come done spend £200 on whatever card he likes on the day and say come on, stick it in for me - and iv been faffing around for months playing the waiting game - aaaggghhhhh!!!!

Don't know if this will be any good to you but I sold my 5970 a while back to buy x2 6870's and they perform much better than my 5970 did and run cooler as I have the VTX model which has an amazing cooler.
