I'm still using a 6870 and was wondering if it needs upgrading or if its still good for the latest games?

I want to play Rome 2 when it comes out at decent settings for example.

I think since I'm still using a Q6600 and 4GB ram if I upgraded the cpu, mobo and ram I would have a top performing system again?

Thanks

Latest games would be playable but you'd have to make some compromises on settings i.e. 1920x1080 you'd get mostly high/ultra settings but you might have to turn 1-2 of them down and/or turn down the AA a bit to get consistant playable framerates.

Your CPU and GPU are fairly well balanced you'd only see minor gains overall from upgrading the CPU - a little more if its still running at stock - possibly a bigger gain with something like Rome 2 tho as those types of games do tend to be quite CPU heavy.

I am still running a 6870 along with my core i5 760.

Does a good job if you are prepared to drop quality settings in newer games.

I mainly play call of duty so no problems with a 6870 for that.

You would see a gain if you overclocked your q6600 especially with regards to minimum fps.

I found that going from an i3 540 to a core i5 760 had a nice impact on minimum frame rates which makes for a smoother gameplay experience.

A nice upgrade though and quite cheap would be to a 7850/7870 which is what i am thinking of doing.

You would need your cpu overclocked though as at stock it would be a bottleneck.

Sticking a 6870 in a newer setup wouldnt be a bad move and would mean later on when you upgraded your 6870 you would have a setup to take full advantage of a newer card.

Using a 6870 still myself and can still get decent frames at medium/high to max settings depending on the title at 1920 x 1080 resolution.

Upgrading the CPU to a more current quad core would definitely improve your minimum framerate, where as improving the graphics card would only see increases when you're not being CPU limited.
