Currently running 9800gtx sli and thinking of upgrading to 6870 would it be a much of an increase from my current cards?
Thx

You should notice a fair improvement, not necessarily just in maximum frame output but more with minimums and averages, possibly less noise and just generally smoother.

Personally I'd save up a bit more and go to a 6950 2gb card, even second hand if you really have to. Far better jump in terms of performance. The 6870 was barely any faster than the 5870 before it, which sell for £100 second hand now.

thanks for your replies... what if i get 6870 in CF? i think i could get it for around £240 CF setup or just buy single 6950 or 6970.

alright thanks i will be getting an 6970 soon :)
Just a reminder that it is agreed that the 6970 is only a mere 3% faster than the 6950, you should probably consider if it really is worth the extra money. Also the 6970 don't comes with a nice custom cooler like the 6950 do.

Personally I'd rather get the following:

than a 6970 with a louder, not as cooling efficient blower type cooler at a £50~£70 extra.

Everyone here seems to be pretty hard on the 6870 performance. If you shop around you can get it for a good £70 less than the 6950 (which incidentally seems to be recommended as though it is god's gift to graphics cards).

I've read reviews that say the 6870 can be OC'ed to close to 6950 performance in a lot of games and for those looking for more of a budget solution I think this should be a consideration. Especially considering the 7xxx series cards will probably destroy the 6950 when released...

Actually I don't think people are saying 6870 is crap...in fact I saw a MSI 6870 HAWK (Twin FrozR III) with Dirt 3 game for just £123 on Monday. But the thing is while 6870 would overclock, so would the 6950...and the 6950 would be a bigger jump in performance coming from 9800GTX SLI than the 6870.

Fair point - Agreed the 6950 has better gaming potential. I was just offering up the viewpoint that there might be better bang-for-buck options which would also show an improvement on the 9800GTX SLI.

By the way - I took advantage of the offer you saw on Monday. Bargain! ;)

I have 6850 ( iam on a tight budget) and it can still play BFB2 everythign on high 2x anti aliasing 4x aniscopic 1600X1200 ( playing on a tv so its limited) at around 50 fps is the biggest battle scenes.
If you have the money I would get a better card than the one I have but just to give you an idea of performance from the 6000 series

As a side note , i would try get one with a two fan custom cooler as the stock coolers are really loud past about 50% fan speed

6850 (overclocked) would handle 1920 res with 16xAF 4xAA BFBC2 no problem (I built a friend with a system with i5 760 overclocked to 3.8GHz, with the 6850 overclocked to 850MHz and ran BFBC2 1920x1080, 16xAF, 4xAA smoothly)...you sure you are not having a CPU bottleneck?
