I am thinking of either getting a xfx 5870 v/c or a 6870 v/c instead of my 4870 1gbmem.
The O/C site is selling the xfx for £249s,but i don't know whether it would be better to get the 6870 which would be cheaper. Also would i see much difference in the 2 v/c's running games?

I like a quiet comp, but i don't know how much quieter the 5870 is compared to the 6870,which i think is quiet, and use much less power to run?

Also is the XFX 5870 a reference card,as i would be likely to put a third party cooler on it?

My system specs are.
E8400 o/c to 3.8
26"monitor 1920x1200 res
4870 v/c
2gb crucial mem

Thanks

I think one would be foolish to buy a 5870 with 69** cards coming round the corner.

I think if ATI have their heads screwed on they will release a 5870 beating card at the £230-250 mark becuase at the moment we've got from NV the 470 at £180 and then the 480 at £330 (almost double) and from ATI 6870 at £190 and then the 5870 at ~£290 leaving a BIG gap in the £200-£300 market, which is most likely going to be the biggest selling point for them.

Hope that makes sense

i recently made a similar upgrade. I went with the 6870 mainly because its newer tech and needs less power.

At the moment all the 6870's use reference designs but its not loud by any stretch. I would expect the third party coolers to be coming out in the next month or so.

the 5870 is faster but if you are looking to overclock at all this difference isn't going to be very noticeable with the resolution you run.

Rahr85.
Is the 5870 a longer v/c than the 6870.
I wont be o/c the v/c's.

I looked on Arctic cooling site, and it seems they have a cooler for the 6870.

As far as i know the 6870 is 9+¾” and the 5870 cards are between 10.5 + 11" long. They are both massive in my view and mine blocks 2 sata ports on the motherboard (which is not cool!)

hope this helps.

Thanks for that info,it does help quite a lot,as iv'e decided the 5870 will be to long for my comp,so iv'e decided to go for the 6870,or wait for the other ati v/c's to come out.
Hopefully they wo'nt cover my sata ports,as you say not a big help at all.
Thanks.
