So ATI introduced these cards to compete with 460? Sounds like a complete failure at the moment

The 460 768MB is £120-£130, ATI have nothing to touch Nvidia at this price

6850 and 460 1GB are roughly the same price at the moment and roughly the same performance. With Nvidia's stronger brand sounds like another fail for ATI

470 is cheaper than 6870, and performs a little better. Another win to Nvidia.

IF the rumoured 460/470 prices are temporary then the above situation might change but at the moment it's looking like a total win for Nvidia in the £100-£200 bracket.

To be fair the launch prices were pretty good but it looks like they have jacked up the price since then.

Given that these chips are cheaper to make I’m sure AMD knows what their doing and if they do price themselves out the market then that can be easily put right but until that happens AMD must be confident that the hardware will sell at the prices set. Either way it's good to have a competitve mid range market for a change.

For me, this just means waiting a little longer.

If ATI had launched cards that were significantly faster/cheaper than NVIDIAs offerings, they`d get another sale.

I`ll just sit back and wait to see who buckles first. If ATI sales aren`t as good as they expected, they`ll probably do something with their pricing.

My 4850 still performs OK, so the longer I wait, the better the increase in performance.

I disagree with this and the thread title. And with implying that UK pricing is a market representative. AMD was able to sell 5800 at ridiculous prices in Q2 and Q3 this year. They will be able to sell their cards now again.

6800 is by no means a total fail by AMD. It may not seem right atm but when they finally fill up the market with their releases, it will be obvious that they made a right call. We have to wait for both it and the price drops.

I agree with this part although I have seen HD6870 being cheaper than GTX470? I might have to review the pricing again. Nvidia's stronger brand is a fair point though. AMD must compete price-wise as that's where they're at their best.

Remember the gtx460 prices are what they are atm only because amd brought out 6800 series. It wasn't long ago that people were moaing about gtx460 price increase as well so we all have amd to thank for really.

On th other hand the 6870/6850 must still be in high demand as amd seem cofident with their pricing strategies. Give it more time and prices will fall eventually.

And is there really a need for such provocative thread title?

6850 cheapest 172euro here.
same price as 460 1gb version-

the 6850 runs less watt and better performance than the 460
makes the 6850 even cheaper down the road
and has eyefinity which for example I have currently.

I had a 5850, so I bought a 6850 to hold its place until either 6970 or 6990 his the stores.
I got it for 171 euro with shipping which I consider a good deal and I got a buyer for the 5850 which means I basically evens out on the purschase and my sisters kid get a brand new fresh 6850 for christmas gift.

It comes down to features,
sure the 6850 spank the 460 1gb, not by much so its basically a even out not so much difference, some want eyefinity well 6850 then, some want physX and then a 460 is then a choice, 3D is soon a toss up.

Now, 100w less for better performance, adds up in money down the road.
then what feature do I want?
3D is a gimmick as far.
PhysX isnt adding much and can be done with havoc or bullet physics.

the 6850 is a good card at the price it has, and the 460 768mb card is cheaper but also draws more power, it evens out the price down the road.

either way, buy the card that makes you happy ;)
