68xx pricing

*sighs*

6870 and 6850 are NOT replacements for 5850/5870. They're occupying a different market niche, currently set by likes of GTX460 768MB and 1GB. Radeon 5850s are being sold for $270 ($310 at launch) and 5830s are sold for $190 ($240 at launch). 6850 and 6870 are said to be $200 and $250 respectively. See how it varies from the current (previous) generation?

indeed, but thats not what they gave us the inpression off before( as far as I looked anyways which isnt that much), what little AMD does say. Also why did they EOL the HD58XX? (unless yet again they didn't or decided not to, again I ve not looked into it much myself) if they got nothing to replace them with...I have not really been keeping up with GPUs much since I got my 480.

I did catch a few people on this very thread stating that people will buy it to "replace" thier HD5870 thinking its a upgrade thats pretty much why I said what I did, also its pretty hard to hit the page number on a phone without zooming right in. thats my excuss for not reading :D

Question: is it likely that the cards they release to compete with the 460 768mb will force down the 460 768mb price (less than £120 right now)? Or are they gonna release a slightly better card for slightly more? If so, I'll just buy the palit 460 on special offer now!

ps. i don't expect a certain answer but anything to help inform my decision is useful!

There weren't any impressions at all, there were rumours months back that due to ATI->AMD rebranding and Bulldozers' integrated graphics, the lowest dedicated graphics card end will be ditched in favour of those integrated graphics and we knew of renaming Barts for a while too. It just that none of the rumours were confirmed and there weren't too many sources either.

As for 5800 series being EOL, they are no longer produced. Replacing the entire range is the only way to make the products attractive to consumers, as a business you should never release similarly priced products of similar quality to the consumers. There's also a matter of scarce resources, technological advancements and about a thousand other reasons why AMD would not produce its old generation any longer.

If someone is prepared to spend £300 on a GPU, then they'll most likely be interested in 6850. I can guarantee that when availability meets demand, these cards will be there for less than the launch price. Hard to tell what the performance difference between these and 5870s will be.

gibbo has pretty much said whats in the cards and what to expect
he is the man with more pulse action than anyone else here.
im taking what gibbo says as to be more accurate than anyones guess work on here

I'm afraid so, but there's a large sack of doubt I would put for his statements. He told us that 6850/70 will be priced no lower than £165/220 respectively (he actually suggested that they will be priced higher due to initial demand). After that he states that 6850/70 will replace 5770/5830 and will vary in performance being better than 5770 but worse than 5850? Can't be right in my book, especially considering the price and that AMD kept a good way of offering more bang for buck at higher-mainstream market since I can remember. The pricing looks absolutely negative as well, we'd expect £150/190 for 6850/70 judging from speculated US prices with 20% VAT added on top.

I'm afraid that if you're looking for a quick purchase, GeForce 460 will be your best bet. Barts is regarded as a replacement for high-mid market and will most likely not be cheaper than £150 for a good year or so. Lower end will not offer anything competitive in terms of performance till the prices are fixed thus making GTX460 768MB a good value card at its price point. That's only my speculation though, don't take it for granted.

Thanks. :) That was the impression I had from what I've read so far so might just buy a 460.

All this naming business is a bit of an own goal from AMD imo. Why? What purpose does it serve to slot new products into a naming convention which aren't any better (relatively) than what they replace, if not to fool the unwary buyer :/ The guys in the purple shirts will be in there element, at least.

This 6870 is a whole 1000 faster than the 5870, and £20 cheaper, too!

They aren't directly replacing 5800 with 6800, can't understand why people don't. I tried to explain several times in these Forums why AMD had at least a few reasons (or justification) for renaming they're already re-branded products, it doesn't make a difference though as people don't read threads any more.

Depends on your resolution, but the 460 768mb is a bit of a bargain at the moment. Even at higher resolutions it holds its own with most games. But if you can stretch a bit more the 1 gig version may be worth it.

Even so it is only a week to wait to see what these new cards bring. However I see little point in AMD releasing these new cards which are supposed to compete with the 460 if they are the prices which Gibbo suggested.

As above, if people are waiting for a 5870 type card, then you'll need to wait for the Cayman based cards which are expected a month or so after the release of the Barts based cards (22nd Oct)

If your looking for a card in the performance region of a 5850, then maybe the Barts XT (6870) may well be the thing and a little more, but we'll have to wait and see.

As for pricing, can't say that I'm too impressed with the expected prices, I may well just pick up whatever is deemed the best value card which may end up being the 1GB 460 or maybe a 470.....

5850 and 5870 = 6950 and 6970 and that will be November
5970 = 6990 and that should be out December

whether we have nice stock levels is another story

Thanks that's a bit more clear. There's been very little I can find on this and I guess it's all speculation until an ATI press release.

I think the fact that they have got the new architecture out in good time is already amazing. I really hope NVIDIA have something as healthy competition is good for us, choice is always welcome too.

Is it worth waiting if im in the market for a card around the £120 mark?

Have my eye on a 5770 at the moment and another for crossfire after christmas

Havent any more money at the moment

Maybe, but only if the 5770 keeps dropping in price as well as the 460 768mb version. The new low end AMD cards are not due to Q1 next year, so nothing new in that price region, just cheaper existing cards IMO.

Hmm, Gibbo informed us that Cayman is being released in November, he's a purchasing manager, I would have thought he already got that figured out :)

it would just be amazing if AMD shock us all a launch everything at once
not going to happen tho

It's not going to happen for a simple reason, they're clearing out the stocks of 5850/70s. You can imagine how sales vary between different sectors of the market.

PS I don't believe rumours and Gibbo's claim that 6870 will be slower than 5850 but we've yet to see any reviews.

Get GeForce 460 768MB, it's the best value card under £120 atm and nothing can beat it up to £150-160 region cards.
