690's are they worth it?

Ild go for 2x 680 OC twin fozr"s 4GB versions . A single 690 only has 2GB of usable Ram , which is fine for two 680 chips , from what I can gather . However 2x stock 680"s give better performance than a single 690 , then add that the MSI is overclocked , and then some more if you add extra OC , which it still has room for , Then for the same money your get the better performance .
Plus are you likely to spend another grand on another 690 to SLI . Whilst you could spend another 400 odd quid , the 680"s drop a little and take advantage of that 4GB or ram with enough GPU grunt
And even if you do go 690 SLI , your have 4 680CPU"S limited by 2gb of vram , I think that would mean you can have higher FPS to the moon , but no more eye candy .

Ive just sold 2 evga 670 and going for a 690, i was cosidering 680 sli as it slightly out performs the 690 on some bench/games but im gong to be running 3 x 1920x1200 dell 2412m monitors at max resolution

Any thoughts on this as my gaming is mainly skyrim,bf3 and so on

Well custom GTX670/GTX680 and GTX690 will all perform pretty much identically at that resolution.

Cost wise custom cooled GTX 670 SLI is the obvious choice with GTX680SLI & GTX690 coming in joint second (depending on offers).

There isn't really any logical reason to choose the 690 over 670 SLI unless you specifically want one.

EDIT: Or want to run a ITX system with the fastest card possible.

690 is a sweet card and if you can get it at a deal price, go for it. 2*680's can work out very expensive, so 2*670's (decent ones) will work out just pennies shy of £700. For £150 more you will get less heat/noise...If you can justify that extra £150, go for it.

I am comparing OcUK prices only.

It really depends on a lot of factors.

If at some point in the future you think you might buy a second 690, then buying one leaves a slot free to do that. If on the other hand you think you won't, then you might as well get 2 x 680s, or even 670s and get broadly the same speed.

1 x 690 really ought to be cheaper than 2 x 680s, but for some reason it isn't, in fact you're effectively paying the same or more for the privilege of gaining a free PCI-E slot. That's the way of "top end" stuff though - it seldom costs the sum of its constituent parts.

I bought 2 x 690s and don't regret it, but that's just me.

I like your thinking Durzel, (what FPS do you get with 690 sli?)

Ive looked about and i can get an asus 690 for less than two asus 680,s so maybe prices are slightly down since this thread started

Hi gregster i agree that less heat noise is a big factor ,now to decide
I really like evga but for a 690 its way to much but i can get either a gigabyte or asus for about the same price .????

The only benefits of having 4GB over 2GB is if you're running multi-monitors and tri-SLI and above

or you play Skyrim with max mods a lot

I have a 5 year warranty on my EVGA and they are generally regarded as the best. My MSI is quality and has a 3 year warrant with a fairly quick turnaround. I look at these factors when purchasing certain PC components and would advise others to do the same.
The Biggest problem I hate with SLI is the noise. On idle it is fine but when gaming with my cards overclocked, it does get quite loud. This is why I would consider the 690. I will be eventually buying 2 waterblocks to eliminate the noise and this will work out very expensive. So maybe 1 690 if you hate noise is a wise choice?

Well done. My eyes burned :D

More like sub £650 for the 670's (MSI 670 PE or Asus Direct CUII) using OCUK prices.

/facepalm

Pray tell, what games won't a 670 played maxed out, but a 6950/70 will?

Where did I say the 6950/70 would be better? I said they're more or less the same for a lot cheaper. And a 670 will not play games like the witcher 2 with ubersampling and lots of AA same with Bf3 with ultra settings and max AA with solid 60fps @ 1080p.

AMD cards are equivilent to Nvidia's offering for near £100 less. Anyone buying a 670/680 needs their heads testing or have money to burn.

True , But if you go down the road and invest a grand on a 690 , unless you stand still , you have hit a wall in upgrading , If I would be sitting here with that sort of finance and hardware capability , then the only further conclusion is to take your system to 3 monitor surround plus adding a third card .
If your gona draw a line and stay single monitor , then I cant see anything being justified beyond a single 680 2gb
