Hey all!

I've had my trusty old MSI R6950 unlocked to a 6970 for about a year, maybe two now, and earlier i got fed up of metro crashing my PC due tothe card getting to hot, so i took it apart and scraped the old crusty, dry paste off the GPU and replaced it with some mx-4, i also say someone get some good effects from changing the VRM Pads with paste and well... Monkey see monkey do...

I put how much i though was theoretically correct on lolz, and after runnin MSI Kombustor for 2-3mins GPU temps #2 and #3 are reading 66 and 59, whilst the GPU itself was running at 45C,

so i'm guessing either the VRM's Dont like MX-4 or there isnt enough on them to make good contact ? Or im an idiot and havnt done it right (probably this) lol, so what do i do guys?

Thanks!!

Curtis

Don't run Kombuster!

You probably shouldn't have taken the pads off the VRM's, but it's done now.

Chances are the brass plate of the cooler isn't coming into contact iirc.

What you need to get yourself is some 'Thermal Heat Transfer Adhesive Thermal Pad' (you would use it on a PS3/360 repair) which can be found quite easily.

Hahaa new it was one ofthe two but dont remember when the 6000's came out :P times gone so quick! :D i'll order some new pads for it then, is their a specific thickness i should use? Also is it reccomended to use any laste with these pads?

Thanks :)

EDIT: So after taking the thing apart again i decided to put some cheapish non-silicon based TIM on the VRM's to see if i put enough on this time, and at start up /idle temps for 1,2,3 were 29,25 and 26, so it seems the new TIM has cured/good contact with the VRM's as when i ran Furmark just now for 7 minutes it gave me 80,85,86 for 1,2,3 which is within limits as 90+ is generally seen for the danger zone? also they only got this high because my card only went up to 30% fan speed even though it was almost cooking itself because its stupid ;)

I just put the speed up to 50% for lulz and the temps have dropped to 63,69,67 for 1,2,3 which i feel is a lot better than it must have been with the pads? do you still reccomend i put new pads on there or should i leave it?

Thanks :)
