I'm getting some artifacting in certain 'dark' sections of games. A red, blotchy, flashy affair. Most prominently in GTA4. 6970 shaders unlocked but clock and memory untouched and It's reaching a maximum of 86c under full load. Could this be anything other than duff hardware?

Doesn't sound promising. Don't suppose you are able to get a screenshot to show the artifacting? How many other games does it happen on? Have you tried switching to the original non-unlocked bios? Reinstalled Drivers? Just thinking of the basic things to rule out.

Reading around I think it's a driver issue. It's very specific and I haven't been able to replicate it outside of GTA where there's a known issue. Sorry, may be a false alarm. :o

Had me worried for a while there. I've just been pushing my clocks higher and now rad this. Please let us know how you get on :)

Well I tried a bit of kill or cure. I pumped the ram up to 1375 and the core to 880. Apart from getting warmer than I would like I can see no problems in Heaven or 3DMark11 so my panic was premature. Facepalm indeed.

Why so hot? reading around it seems pretty normal. I have 3 Akasa Apaches in a Thermaltake Tsumani case and airflow's pretty good. It's a snug fit though and there's no side fan (which I'm thinking about adding). It idles at around 40 so it's quite a jump when at full load but I've turned the memory back down to stock from 1375 as that was making it approach 95!

Wow. Seems a bit odd as I have the same card in an antec 300, again no side fan, and the load temp maxes out at about 73 degrees. This is a stock speeds though. 20degrees+ from unlocked shaders seems a lot.
