I've flashed it with the 6970 bios but as I understand it this can cause problems due to memory timings?

It crashes when playing games, at least that's the only time it's happened.

I haven't done extensive tests but it was happening regularly on CSS (~70C at 25% fan) but when I whacked my fan up to 100% another crash did not happen (~45C).. related?

what GPU and memory clock are you running?

edit: my gpu clock is @ 880mhz
and the memory clock is @ 1375mhz. I'm using the 6970 bios too and I have 2 so its in crossfire.

By crash I mean the screen locks for about 10 seconds, then it flashes with a static-y looking screen then everything's normal and i get a notification from the system tray saying the graphics card driver crashed but recovered.

yea try that. It was recommended on that flash bios website which was posted here. 2gb xfx?

edit: if that does not work, try another 6970 bios. Not the Asus ones since they are the OC edition which could make it unstable.

I had the same problem apart from mine would happen at any temp.
(display driver amd driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered)
was the notification message i had.
Turned out to be a faulty card, It was an Asus.
Had it replaced and its been fine.

Are you using a 6970 BIOS or the modified 6950 BIOS?

I has a similar sounding issue when I was using the 6970 BIOS but changing to the modded one sorted it out.

edit: its not the timings that are the problem its the voltage or power settings for the VRAM that are different for the two cards so using the 6970 BIOS will be pushing your VRAM too hard which causes the crashes.
