6950 for my rig?

Hi guys,

Been using OcUK now for nearly 5 years so thought it was about time I joined the forums and said Hi :p

Also i'm looking to upgrade my GC to a Sapphire 6950 "Dual Fan Edition" and was wondering whether or not my ageing PSU would be up for the task.

Rig:

CPU ----- Intel i7 2600k @ 4.4ghz
Cooler --- Corsair H60
MB ------ Asus P8Z68 Deluxe
RAM ----- 4 x 4GB Corsair Vengence @ 1600mhz (16GB)
SSD ----- 2 x OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB in raid 0 (OS)
HDD ----- 2 x SG Momentus XT 500GB in raid 0 (Gaming)
--------- 2 x WD Caviar Black 1TB Sata 6GB/s in raid 0 (Storage)
GC ------ Sapphire 4870 Toxic 1GB
PSU ----- Enermax Infiniti 650w (EIN650AWT)

The PSU was one of the original items i bought from OcUK so it must be getting on for nearly 5 years now, but still going strong.

I will be looking to upgrade the PSU next year to either a OCZ ZX1000/1250w or Corsair AX1250w and going Crossfire, but with Christmas just round the corner and money being a bit tight I can't afford both the GC and PSU, and would like to get a new GC ready for SWTOR (in beta the 4870 was struggling with the shadows, especially in buildings), so was wondering whether you guys think i'll be able to manage running a single 6950 with the current PSU considering it's age?

Thanks in advance.

I suspect your current PSU will be fine for the 6950 especially as you'll be upgrading it soon enough anyway.

As for those 2 PSUs you suggested upgrading too, I suspect a good quality 850W PSU will easily handle 2 6950s in crossfire with enough headroom for overclocking/upgrades. No need for 1000/1200W for that rig.

Strangely though, I was playing the SWTOR beta on a HD 3870X2 with max settings and forced 4x AA and was getting a playable 30-50FPS.

the new 7xxx series graphics cards are now right around the corner, seeing as you've waited 5years whats a few more weeks?

as bobbyspangles said you have no need for 1kw+ for xfire, tri/quad xfire yes but not 'normal' xfire. 750/850w will be enoughfor xfire.

Thx for the input guys, looking at the sapphire for the dual bios switch, don't know whether the extra shaders are still unlockable on them though.

Had mine set up exactly the same and was getting 30-50FPS outside etc but when i went into a building I would get terrible lag down to about 10-20FPS, when i switched off the shadows it shot up to 80FPS.

Yeah that was another plan, but would like to give 'em 6 months or so to iron out any probs they have. Was thinking on the 1kw+ more for future proofing.

850w is more than future proof enough unless planning on tri/quad fire, the new cardsare ment to be more energy efficient then the current gen so less power needed.

the sapphire toxic is the one with the best chance of unlocking, just need to flick the switch no bios flashing as a modified bios is already included.

Cool, your liked to the MSI there was that intentional?
