hey I recently upgraded my system as my GPU was being bottlenecked by my CPU.
now that is no longer a problem, but my msi r6950 twinfrozr iii 2gb is getting to 70c-80c in games and the fans are getting so loud i have to turn the TV up to hear whats going on
Is this normal? if not what is there i can do to try and fix it?

my specs are
i5 3570k @3.8GHz
8GB DDR3 1600mhz RAM
MSI 6950 2GB
Gigabyte Z77 D3H
Alpenföhn Matterhorn Pure Edition Cooler

if this matters any

i removed the cooler and apllied thermal paste upon putting it back in and booting up i ran a game and was fine for around 10 mins running at about 55-60c then i got a blue screen error booted up and started playing again then the same thing happened
error code was '0x0000003b system_service_exception'

not sure on the error code, but msi afterburner custom fan profile is really good to make your card run abit cooler,

maybe its not spreading the heat of the ram chips properly or are the power connectors in all of the way?

How's the airflow of your case? Custom cooler like the the Twin FrozR dump heat into the case, and if the heat is not effectively remove from the lower half of the case, it will get recycled back into the graphic cooler. If your case's side-panel has fan mount spots, adding a fan as "exhaust" next the the graphic card's level will help lower the temp quite a but, and I think in your case it might drop the max temp down to 75-76C.

Another thing you should do has have a good at adjusting the custom fanspeed profile in MSI Afterburner (as already pointed out above). Even if you lower the fanspeed by may be 10-20%, it might not even increase the temp by 1C...but it would be much quieter.

ive sorted out the noise and heat issue now, it was really as simple as reapplying the thermal paste makes me feel kinda stupid but at least its fixed temps dropped to around 60c.
my side fan is an intake atm am i right in thinking that the air should be pushed out the back through the 'honeycombed' Expansion slots holes?

Unlike cards with reference cooler with blower type fan which the cooler's case is pretty much sealed and exhaust through the back; whereas custom coolers like the Twin FrozR the fans and heatsink is pretty much open and the fan would dump almost the heat into the case (and rely on case's airflow to get rid of the heat), rather than exhausting out the back.

The side-panel fan would work better as exhaust than intake, this is because if you think about it...imagine a balloon with hot air in it and with two small holes for the hot air to leak, would it be faster to cool the inside by forcing more cold air into it, or would it be better to make the holes biggers or make more holes for the hot air to escape within moment and with reasonable amount of cool air going inside from other source ? I know balloon doesn't really work that way, but I think you understand what I mean.

I myself have tried both intake and exhaust on the side-panel with my Twin FrozR II cooler, and with the side-panel fan as exhaust, it is good 3-5C lower than the fan as intake.

However if you want to keep it as intake, I guess you could consider placing one more fan under the graphic card at a distance...may be sitting on top of the PSU (if the case is with a PSU mount at bottom) to blow the hot air toward the top of the case, that should force the hot air to move toward the top/top rear exhaust fan of the case at a much faster rate.
