6950 not working

Just got myself an HIS 6950 2GB (not the ICE-Q version). Plugged in but when I boot I get absolutely no signal at all from the card.

Running on a P5K-E (oldish I know, but should still be fine), Corsair HX620W (yes both 6-pins are plugged in).

I've tried in both PCI-E slots on the MB, have tried both DVI and HDMI outputs on the card, nothing. My old 4870 still works perfectly fine in there.

Upon boot, the fan starts loud for a split second, then drops down to normal (just as my old 4870 does).

As far as I can tell, this card doesn't have any BIOS switches so can't try that. I've also reset the BIOS completely on the MB, but that didn't help either.

Is it likely to be a dud card?

Cheers

I was under the impression that PCI-E cards were backward compatible with older version slots (just they ran under the reduced bus speed that that comes with)?

Correct. Only one of the connectors on the card will fit the adapter. Like I said, the HDMI out doesn't give anything to my TV either.

Also, the PC doesn't try to boot in the background either (no HDD activity). Not sure if it means anything, but I do notice the DVD drive constantly starts spinning up then spinning down when I do turn it on. This continues for ~40 secs

Yup, at least 12 times now... The other card works perfectly each time. I've tried with only one power connector on the 6950 the fan stays on very loud, when I plug it back it, the fan returns to normal but still no signal! :(

Only one of the DVI ports on mine supports VGA passthrough. Before I realised this I stared at a blank screen too. Although I can't remember if my TV got an output automatically when plugging in the HDMI.

The other DVI port on mine doesn't have the correct holes for the pins for the adapter, so presumably the one that does have the holes (the one I'm using) is the one with passthrough. Either way, HDMI still didn't work.

Well I sent this back to the seller and he has confirmed to me that he has tested it working at his shop! I simply cannot understand why this didn't work for me....any suggestions?

Okay, I got sent another identical card by the supplier and guess what, still get no output whatsoever.

This must be some kind of compatibility issue but I can't find anything to back that up. I've googled and found plenty of other people who have the same MB/CPU/GPU combo as me with no apparent problems.

Should be able to take it round a mates tonight to try it in his which should definitely confirm the card works (although I'm 99% sure it does)

Does anyone have ANY idea why there could be some issue with this card in my setup?

Exact same power connectors (2x 6-pin).

I can literally pull the 6950 out, swap the 2x 6-pins onto the 4870, drop that back in and it works fine every time. As soon as I stick the 6950 in, nothing

Yup, fan spins up 100% for half a second, then drops down to normal speed (just as my 4870 does on boot). If I remove one or both of the 6-pins the fan stays constantly on full speed as expected.

The MB has lights which are supposed to come on if the card isn't seated properly, but they don't show at all.

I've tried editing various BIOS settings whilst the 4870 is in, but I just can't get a single bit of life out of it. So so infuriating, I really don't know what to do. I just simply can't understand how I get NOTHING.

No-one here at uni that I know has a machine with PCI-E (typical eh?!). Will be home at the weekend and I think one of my mates there does have one so will try it in his.

Will have a go with the molex adapters in a mo. Cheers

Flashed BIOS to the latest version last week.

Doesn't have a speaker, but there are pins to attach one on the MB. Might be able to find one lying around when I'm home at the weekend

Okay, I've tried this in another computer (albeit with the same PSU from mine - the other one was missing...), exactly the same problem. Of course, this means my PSU could still be the culprit, but it seems highly highly unlikely. A corsair HX620W should be able to handle this card EASILY (especially once I've unplugged absolutely everything else from the PSU - HDD's, optical drives etc.)

So this leads me to 3 possible conclusions:

1 - Both cards he has sent me are dead
2 - My PSU can't power the card
3 - For whatever reason, this card won't work in PCI-e v1 MB's (the other PC I tried is also PCI-e 1)

I'm waiting for a mate to come home so I can try in his PCI-e v2 board.

EDIT: I found this article: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2412/3

At the bottom it says:

Unfortunately, there have been some reports of new PCI-E 2.0 graphics cards refusing to POST (Power On Self-Test) in motherboards containing chipsets without PCI Express 2.0 support. We can assure you this is not by design as the PCI-SIG PCI Express 2.0 Specification is very clear on the issue - PCI Express 2.0 is backward-compatible with PCI Express 1.x in every case. With this in mind, and knowing that some PCI Express 1.x motherboards have no problems running the new graphics cards while others do, we have no choice but to blame the board in the case of no video. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult to determine if problems await during the upgrade process; you must first consult with others that use the same video card/motherboard combination. Thankfully the cases of incompatibility seem to be few and far between.

Maybe I've just been unlucky?
