6950 replacement

Hi all,

My trusty 6950 (with unlocked shaders) has just bitten the dust and needs replacing. As this machine is also used for work I need a replacement quickly, so budget is a bit tight - ideally around the £100 mark, but could be persuaded to stretch to maybe £150 if it gave a huge amount of extra bang for the buck. Games wise, I am almost exclusively playing elite at 1920*1200 at the moment. Rest of the system is an i5 2500k clocked to 4.5 GHz, 4GB RAM and a 750W psu, and would need to fit an Antec 300 case.

Budget wise the R7 260X and 265 seem to fit the bill, is the 270 or 270X worth the extra? I am a bit out of the loop at the moment due to recent fatherhood, so any advice is gratefully received!

If you dont have a problem with used, then a 7950/7970 can be picked up for under £100 easy enough. That would be quite a bit better than a 270(x) which is basicly a 7850/7870.

a 270 would probably be a sidegrade from your unlocked 6950.

My wifes machine has a 270X and it was quicker than my unlocked 6950 when I had it. As New Boy suggests though, second hand you could get something a fair bit faster.

B-grade 7950 would be at least TWICE as fast as your 6950.

280 cards were on special at about £150 last week...rebadged 7950 but a lot better than the 270.
