Has anybody come across any comparisons between 6950 and 7850 at the same clock/memory speeds? Seen one with a 5850 where the 5850 was not far behind.

As you can see they'll have similar performance, the 7850 uses less power but has better OC headroom and is the latest tech. Really comes down to how much cheaper can you find a 6950 for and whether you think the extra for the 7850 is worth it.

What is the point of paying more for a card that does not offer better performance than an older one at the same clocks?

If you are coming from a lesser performing card or doing a new build.

If you have a 6950, the 7850 is a pointless upgrade as you are not going to notice a visible difference in game.

well aren't the big gains just in battlefield 3 ?

The frostbite 2.0 engine mainly, which includes BF3, medal of honor:war fighter and quite other games coming out on this game engine. Also big gains from in wargame:escalation among others.

I went from a 6950 to a 7870.

The performance improvement is anything from 10 to 40% at stock, add to that the 7870 over clocks quite a bit higher and scales better.

It was definitely worth it to me, but i'm also running a card that is clock for clock 10% faster and generally overclocks a little higher than the 7850.

I read that clock by clock the 7850 is better then the 6950 but the 5850 and obv the 5950 is better, but the 7xxx series has better tesselation.

The 12.11 drivers have brought a lot more performance to the 7xxx series. Also my 7850 is clocked to 1200 core and 1450 memory which was really easy to setup (i haven't found the limit yet and haven't clocked it higher)
