6970 Crashing/overheating?

Hello all,

Bought a HIS 6970 about a month back was fine for a few days with the 10.12a drivers, then when playing WoW i suddenly had a crazy issue occur. The screen went black and then the screen reappeared but it had halved the screen then switched them round!?

So to visualise the windows start icon is now in the bottom right of the middle of the screen. I could even move my mouse from the middle off the right of the screen and onto the left side.

Thinking this was a driver issues i tracked down the 11 beta drivers and installed them just over a week ago and have had no issues playing games at all. After an intense gaming session this evening on LOL it happen'd again, the screen went Orange with lines then reappeared with LOL in two pieces.

Is this a driver issue? or is this a problem with the card itself? It may be overheating but not had a chance to check yet.

Anyone experiencing this or had any issues like it?

That sounds a bit odd!

Have you checked your video cable? (sounds silly but you never know)

I am on 10.11 drivers and have had no issues with my 6950 not even a gpu related crash or lock up.

have a run through CCC to check monitor detect and turn off hdtv if your not using a tv.

If you could list your PSU and monitor others it may help others with heping you:)

Small update: I have tried moving the card into the bottom slot of the Motherboard in the hope it would sort it self but alas just sitting on "The witchers" intro video for a few minutes the issue will occur.

At this point the card is sitting at about 78-80 degrees in temps, as soon as i restart the comp the issue resolves it self and has been sat for hours on windows with no issues. I started up the witcher again and sat on the intro video and the issue occurred straight away, it seems to vary when it occurs, it can occur straight away or take a few minutes on the Witcher intro to happen. Then for example on Saturday it occurred and i was then able to reset and carry on for a few games (1/2hr) before occurring again.

I have sent a RMA to OCUK as I'm sure it must be an issue with the card as unable to find any advice or guidance on this.

I've had nothing but problems with mine also if i Alt + tab and then go back into game the core stays @ 500mhz and runs rubbish n laggy starting to wish i had bought a 570gtx or waitied for a 580gtx to come into stock, I check for driver updates everyday but ATI being ATI nothing as of yet and the next set of drivers knowing my luck won't fix it either. *angry*

Case is a corsair 800d, I thought the temp was a little high but the card from several sources said it should be able to handle up to 100 before issues occur?

Case is pretty tidy so the air flow seems fine, got the bottom and front fans dragging air in and the back and 3 top fans dragging it out. Tried messing about with.the cooling a little but the card sits at 50 not sure what else to try at the moment or what it could be.

my slightly overvolted 6950 idles at 57 but it never goes over 74 celsius running furmark or heaven

Well that clears up one thing for me at least :) The heat in my case is due to CPU cooling, the H-50 rad gets pretty hot to the touch because the fans aren't clearing the heat out quick enough. I'm upgrading to a H-70 tomorrow with a pair of Vipers.

Update: When I got home from work this evening I booted the pc straight up and started "The witcher" left it on the introduction movie for less than 30-40 seconds before my issue occurred. I then restarted the computer and the bios/windows start up screens all had black and red lines across them.

A friend kindly lent me his 6970 this evening a VTX Radeon 6970, this card has worked superbly all evening. No issues while running the witcher several times or during the several hours of gaming we did this evening to test the rest of the system out. The card is sat idle at around the 52 mark so no real difference to the HIS 6970.

As mentioned I have spoken to OCUK and will be RMA'ing it back to them tomorrow.

Hi Kaelsin,

I would agree, 50+ idle is a touch high for the card, the aim temp would be 40 - 43 idle, without being rude to others 35c idle is a bit of misinformation, so dont panic that your so far away from that number. If i boot up from cold and leave my card it idles down in the low 30's however, if you run a game or benchtest for a lenght of time get the card hitting a 88.c area, then you will never get it back down to that, it should be on a low 40number.

If your fan is on 38% on idle then thats to high, normal auto fan at idle would be 24-26%

Normal things first look at case air flow, clean your fans did mine last night a god they really needed it. helped take a few (c) off the numbers.

Also run heaven twice (second time bench it) should be in the 52frame area max temp should be no higher than 89-90'c

to give you an idea mine does the following

First boot idle (doing nothing after the boot) 32c
after running bench tests etc (leave it for 10 mins doing nothing) 40c

second run on heaven Max temp 87c fan max 37%

I would say my case air flow is avg to good, also have a quiet system so one intake one outtake, one fan on cpu and the gpu fan, thats it.

Outside of that could be a driver issue, the 6970 today should have its first real drivers.

hope that helps

Thanks for the reply, before heading off to work I had another play around. Still had my friends 6970 so booted that up cold and was sat at 32c then sat around 47c idle. Tried The witcher and a few other games quickly this morning with no issues. Put my dud 6970 in and encountered issues straight away so will be sending it off this afternoon.
