Bit of a weird one this.
I recently upgraded my GTX 260 to a shiny new 6970. Pretty impressed so far but having some strange fluctuations in clock speed/memory speed.
The card clocks to 950 core 1450 mem no problems and MS afterburner fan profiles keep it reasonably quiet and cool.
However since the minute I installed the drivers and set it up whenever I scroll a web page eg. the forums, I get a strange high pitched clicking sound almost like capacitor squeal from my old 8800GTX but very regular and in sync with my scroll wheel. I thought it a little odd to begin with but after further investigating high idle temps it seems that the card is kicking in full 3d clocks every time I scroll a web page....
SImply clicking my scroll wheel down once makes the clocks jump from 250/150 to 950/1450. If i stop scrolling then after 3 secs they revert back. Leaving the web page stationary has no effect on clocks and they stay idle but the second i scroll they jump up again. The result is my idle temps are around 10C higher when browsing the web than say my screen saver or using iTunes.
This only happens when scrolling the entire web page and not for example the text box scroll bar I am writing in. The rest of my new rig happily idles when browsing the net but the 6970 keeps jumping back and forth and the fan keeps ramping up and down which is annoying to say the least...
Anyone else seeing this and is it normal? Surely it doesnt need full 3D clocks just to scroll a web page.
