I've got a 5870 at mo and can run BF3 beta on max and get 35 - 40 fps at 1650 x 1050. It's fairly smooth at that.
I want to upgrade and I'm thinking of a 6990.
Would I be better waiting until the next generation cards to come out or just buy the 6990?
How much better will the next gen cards be and will they be as expensive as the 6990?

Well next Gen is likely to be Q1 for the higher end cards, so if you are willing to wait then I say stick with what you have or maybe get a second 5870 cheap 2nd hand if your board supports CrossFire?

Rumours put the release of next generation cards at the earliest late Q4/2011 but realistically people are saying Q1/2012 and that's not factoring in delays that normally occur. Even when the next generation of cards are released it'll be the lower spec cards of the 7xxx series that'll come out first, so you're looking at 7570-7870 etc which some argue will be just as good as current enthusiast level cards - as for the price comparison, I would say the early models of 7xxx series will probably be cheaper than 6990. But remember, this is all speculation.

It really depends on whether or not you can bare playing the upcoming titles on your 5870.

Having just done this very upgrade it's a pretty big jump in performance. I think the q1 2012 28nm speculation is optimistic at best and we are probably looking more at a q2 release at the earliest for the high end parts. I got a great deal on my 6990 but if i were buying now at full rrp i wouldn't have bothered.
