6990 Overheating on resume

Hi all,

On every resume from sleep or hibernate my 6950 or the second gpu on the 6990 will show 100% usage in CCC or Afterburner. Because the primary adapter on the 6990 controls the fan speed and is at 0% usage, the second adapter gets hotter and hotter. I've left it until it got to 87C before I manually set the fan higher.

If it happens on the 6950 it isn't such a problem since the fan on that just ramps up. Sometimes it occurs on the 6990, sometimes the 6950, sometimes both. Never on the primary gpu on the 6990 though.

I've found I can get the usage down to 0% on the cards by running a program that uses gpu acceleration, but without actually doing anything within that program. For example, starting Cyberlink PowerDirector and then exiting, or starting Furmark so it displays the startup options and then exiting.

I'm worried that if my PC were to resume from sleep without me there it will kill my 6990.

I haven't tried too much to fix this yet - wondering if someone knows the fix before I spend a lot of time on this. So far I've tried using defaults in CCC, no OC on gpu/cpu, and not running Afterburner.

Thanks.

It wouldn't kill you're 6990 (don't worry), when cards get too hot (100c+) they throttle back the voltage by themselves to stay cool.

I can't think of a fix, but by the look of the fast spec in your sig, boot time must be quick. If I were you I'd try to use sleep and hibernate less and just shutdown..
