has i've sold my 6950 i'm just running a single 6990, do i still need the 4 pin molex SLI / XFIRE Power Connector connected on the motherboard?

I've never used that Molex board connector.I have the same board and ran 6970's in crossfire and now a Nvidia 690 without any power problems what so ever. You should be fine.
 
No that is for running 3+ cards to allow more power to the pci-e lanes and not fry the motherboard when extreme overclocking.

Unless your going for records with a tri or quad set up its not needed.
 
Why did you sell mate? not getting on with TriFire? Although, I'm thinking you would have glitching in 3DMark11 with that combo due to less shaders... when I tried to pair a 6950 even flashed to 6970, I got problems...
