Got a bit of spare cash and I wouldn't mind upgrading my 6990 while I can, since the 7990 is going to be stupid money, I was considering the 7970Xfire option, or SLI 680 but if I'm correct there doesn't seem to be much in it performance wise and the 680's are another £100 per card.
What ya reakon?
I game at 1080 and want over 120FPS in BF3 maxed out.
Oh and Im running an 3770k @ 4.8GHZ along side (hopefully this wont bottleneck)?

Your current spec doesn't run BF at 120fps on 1080p?

would have thought the 6990 would be up for the job

7970 CF is a teeny bit slower than 680 SLI. Not worth the extra cost IMO so I would go 7970 CF.

Still won't give you a constant 120 FPS though.

As above, I'd go for 7970 CF given the price difference, but constant 120 FPS is asking a lot- even for a single screen. Most importantly though, you should be above 60 FPS at all times.

keep the 6990 mate till the next gen.
I sold mine and got a 690 that I had for a week before I sold it and now I have a 580 classified but if I could go back a few weeks id still have a watercooled 6990

Can you genuinely tell any difference from 60fps to 120?

So much money for 1080p.

There is a definite difference in smoothness between 60 and 120fps. Personally it is important to me for 3D vision, but there is a noticeable difference for 2D games too IMO. Obviously this applies mainly to FPS's, there is virtually no difference for a slow paced RTS or sandbox game.

I can see it more with 3d vision, but I think a lot of it is psychological. Just because you know you are getting 120 frames you probably tell yourself it's smoother. :p

For example Bf3 with me ranges from about 100 to 50 in busier areas, can't notice any drop in frame rate.

Use a 120Hz monitor and play at 120 fps in a fast shooter for a week then play at 60hz and 60fps and you will eat your words....

Is that because of the 120hz or the 120fps though? (So if it was 120hz but 60fps would it feel noticeable?) I've heard great things about 120hz screens.

One of my regrets tbh, I spent over £200 on a 27' iiyama 1ms, but I probably should have got a 120hz but I decided not to, always wanted to try one.

don't need 120fps for 2d imo, the panel is smoother even at 60 and average will be above that with 7970 / 680 cf

for 3d vision 120 fps would be good for 60fp per eye, but who's gonna play bf3 online in 3d? crazy!

Agreed. I tried and got owned and owned and owned...3D is great for normal gaming though and I wouldn't have it any other way. 120HZ Monitors is the way forward and I can notice the difference from 50fps to 90fps...So much smoother.
