6990m vs gtx 580m

Dunno. But be aware that the 6990 desktop card has 2 GPUs, while the 6990m has just one.. AMDs naming policy there being sneakier than NVidias.

Clocking either of these will depend mostly on your heat dissipation ability.

Theres a review of both these cards on tomshardware (yeah, I know that site doesnt have a lot of credibility)
 
The gtx580 is meant to be marginally quicker at stock. Sadly, answering your overclocking question isn't so easy as you haven't told us which machine you're thinking of using the card in. Your ability to overclock is strongly limited to the cooling available and that is limited to chassis design.

I went with the 6990m and its a fast card. I have not overclocked it so dont know how far they go. You could ask on the notebookreview site forum as they have m17/m18 sections containing overclocking threads.

Looking at the M18 Alienware. 6990M vs 580M
But having looked at the Samsung form Oc that looks a very good machine , will see if i can get the hard drive changed and look at that

I have an m18 so thats where I go for info but there is info for most laptops on that site. You should consider the Dell Outlet as they have some very good deals on m17/18's. There is a big thread about it in this forum.
