6Gb of ram in Win 7 64 but only using 4Gb?

Hey all.

Not sure what the situation is here but basically I have a total of 6Gb installed and am running Win 7 Home Premium 64.

Now, it's my understanding then that I should be able to utilise the full capacity but thing is, if I go into task manager and look at the Physical Memory panel I see the following:

Total - 6142
Cached - 4033
Available - 4118
Free - 129

It's the available section that has me concerned. That (if I'm correct) is telling me that I'm only utilising 4Gb of ram.

So, question is, whats happening to the other 2Gb?

I have Corsair XMS2 ram. 6GB in total comprising 2x 2gb sticks and 2x 1Gb sticks. Here are the specs. I hope this helps:

Slot 1 & 3
PC2-6400 (400Mhz)
CM2X2048-6400C5

Slot 2 & 4
PC2-6400 (400Mhz)
CM2X1024-6400C4

Dram Frequency: 400 Mhz
FSB:RAM: 2:3
Ram times are 5-5-5-18 respectively.

Think that’s been clocked down to the slower latencies as the 1Gb sticks have timings of 4-4-4-12. Command rate is 2T as well.
So yeah I’m not even sure if my mixture of memory is working to make it DDR2 or if that is the reason why it's not actually using 6Gb but thinking about it now, if it's "showing it" and BIOS recognises 6Gb of ram, then why can't I use it all?

Thanks for reading.

What motherboard have you got? I think you have to put the 2gb ram in the same colour slot as each other and the 1gb ram in same colour slot as each other. Check which slots are for Dual channel and put the 2gb ram in them.

It's the Foxconn P9657AA. Yes I know what your saying but I am certain that they are in the correct coloured slots. Slots are both Blue and Yellow and each matching pair of sticks are in the same matching colour slots.

Any other suggestion?

Looks fine to me. The 2GB you think is missing is actually the memory that's in use and unavailable for anything else.

Try pressing the resource monitor button on the task manager performance tab. Then look at memory tab, it'll show you what machine is doing with the memory.

Ah yes I see where I'm mistaken. Excuse me whilst I stand up and slap myself on the back of the head :)

I see that I am using memory as well so in essence I will have that 4GB as "available" or "free" memory.

Incidentally, looking at my original post, I will be running in dual channel mode won't I even though I'm using different but matching pairs of ram?
