I've just bought the Onkyo TX-SR705 and i'm looking to get some 7.1 speakers... i've been going round and round in circles and was wondering if anyone could offer some advice/recommendations? :D

Am i right in thinking that if i just buy a set (front/rear/side/centre/sub) it's going to be noticeably "lacking" compared to buying them separately? (in terms of quality).

Budget is around £700

Grateful for any suggestions!

Thanks

That depends. £700 will get you a decent, if budget satellite 5.1 system. However if you just buy mains and rears for now- and if 2 channel performance is a priority, and in a larger room, you'll get much higher sound quality. Then add centre and sub later. I would recommend you go and have a listen to a £700 5.1 speaker system, then £700 floorstanders, and £400 floorstanders.

For sat system, I recommend the Q Acoustics speakers.

i've not head much about Kef - im assuming they're good? :P

I don't rate Kef highly anymore, after the move to China. Also KHT aren't that amazing. For stereo they're pretty crap, and the centre is really weak. HT has Kef Reference 2.2 + Reference Model 200.

I should probably add that it's a medium size room - and will be used for 50% gaming / 50% films

Ohh also: if persuaded - my mate can go halves - so in theory - the budget can be as much as (roughly) £1300 :O

how big is the room? id say buying the best 5.1 speakers you can and biamping the front pair may benefit you more

Room is... about 5 metre square (guesswork!)

Tempted to just get a 5.1 bundle for around £1300ish...... sucks not knowing what brands are good though...... panasonic...Audica...Accoustic Energy.. Pioneer.. Mission...... argh :D

Oh actually i think i've found the place you mentioned :P

Thanks for the input so far guys.

Any thoughts on the KEF KHT5005.2 ? They seem pretty good (although i cant see if you can buy the satellites separately?)
