Hey guys,

Looking to get a new gfx card as my 480 just isn't cutting it in the new games that keep coming out.

I originally was going to get a 770GTX but then read that these are basicly 680GTX's with a few revisions and that the 780 is an all new card so to speak.

At this moment in time I can afford either a 770GTX or a 4gb 770GTX, however would I be better off waiting another month and get a 780?

Cheers

Dave

What resolution do you game at?

780 is more future proof, seeing you still have a 480 I guess you don't upgrade often so the 780 imo would be a better choice.
The other option is an AMD 290 or 290X, they are cheaper but do offer slightly better performance. They do run hotter and noisier than the 780, but than so does your 480. So yea... If you're staying with Nvidia imo wait a month, or go down the AMD route.

Just been reading up on the 290 and the benchmarks are looking good!

may take a look to see what happens in the build up to Christmas and then make a desision.

Thanks for pointing out the AMD card though is well worth a ponder!

How far away are you from your PC where you sit? For the stock cooler, the best balance between temp and fan speed is around 50-55%, but it may be too noisy if you have the PC on the desk close to you at ear-level; if you have your PC on the floor around 1 meter away, while you would still hear it, but it's not too bad as long as you actually use speakers at normal volume level.

You can have a look on my thread to get an idea on temp and noise (mine is a unlocked 290 to 290x):

Unless you go 780ti then Nvidia wont offer you anything that Amd wont do faster for less money even then the 7990 beats the 780ti for less money.
So i would guess the 290 would give you best results for your money

Please don't give people such biased 1 sided completely wrong advise.
Nvidia cards do many things better then AMD

1) PhysX - Borderlands 2 as 1 example is much better on an Nvidia card
2) Drivers - The per game profiles & other driver options like digital vibrance, with AMD you need to use 3rd party software, not much is actually built into their drivers
3) G-Sync - In the future the OP may buy a new monitor that supports this.
4) 780 vs 290 specifically - Cooler, quieter and use less power

The 2 things imo that AMD do better is

1) Price/performance - bang for buck is better.
2) Mining Litecoin

If the OP is looking for the best bang for buck with top performance than the 290 and 290X are definitely worth a look. But if the OP wants more than pure grunt the 780 is the way forward. To say "Nvidia won't offer you anything AMD won't do faster" is just stupid

Pretty sure he was referring specifically to performance/bang for bucks without consideration on features in his context, so he's not exactly wrong.

Well said Dave. EdgeDS is doing this quite often in threads and it is becoming tiresome to read. I have no issue with bias but giving misinformation is wrong.

yes yes yes, and every benchmark you find showing one side to be better there will another showing the other side to be better. ad infinitum

As has been said, it is just plain wrong to say that one side is better than the other, they both have their good and bad points.

I am looking to future proof myself as much as possible tbh. Games like Star Citizen are on the horizon and that looks like its going to need quite a bit of grunt to run.

My Rig sits on my desk along side my monitor so noise is another factor.

If noise is a factor then go the Nvidia route.
290 and 290X are hot and noisy with no custom cooled versions till Jan/Feb and even that is not confirmed.

You missed the point...the thing is provided that both the GTX780 and the 290Pro are completely equal in performance, the fact remains that the price of 290Pro is lower.

290Pro is good for people who don't want to spend much more than £300 and willing to put up with the possible noise or those that are more adventurous to get a 3rd party cooler to fit themselves; but for people who can afford to pay more and not confident/comfortable with fitting the cooler themselves, the GTX780s with custom cooler are a good alternative.

I've missed the point, laughing out loud, EdgeDs says "Nvidia wont offer you anything that AMD wont do faster for less money" and you then agree with him.
The point is that that is a very broad and sweeping statement that has no truth to it at all. there are a lot of things that AMD do do faster and cheaper but to say "Nvidia wont offer you anything that AMD wont do faster for less money" is ridiculous.

If there's really "no truth in it at all" as you put it, then would you care to list the cards which Nvidia has that's equal or faster in performance to AMD's counterparts that are NOT more expensive?

Also, look at how long the pricing of the GTX670 and GTX680 been sitting at way above the 7950/7970's...

A 560TI does PhysX faster than a 290X

Sometimes people want more then just pure grunt.
A 780 offers PhysX, low power draw, low noise, low heat, a more complete driver set with far more options, better support on their forums etc

A 290 offers pure grunt.

Some people want pure grunt
Some people are willing to pay extra for a more complete package

Is that really so hard to understand?
I don't understand how this is confusing you...
