I built my PC in 2001 and haven't updated it since so I think its about time I upgraded! I want to be able to use it for gaming and internet but not video compression. It'll be running XP and I want to try to overclock it to 4GHz if possible. I've been lurking on the forums for a while now reading up and think I've got a good spec. Please check it to see if theres anything better for an equivalent or lower price.

I'll be hooking it up to a Nexus 400W PSU. Will it be sufficient? http://www.silentpcreview.com/article204-page1.html

if your psu is 7 years old i wont risk it, otherwise all looks good

get the 4870 1GB or 4870x2 if you can afford it though esp if your next upgrade is another 7 years away

I definitely wouldn't risk a 7 year old 400W PSU with that spec.

As suggested above, I'd go for the 4870. Maybe even the 4870x2 if you have a screen (and the money) with a nice high res (e.g. 1680x1050)

I would opt for a slightly more powerful PSU, I think 600w would benefit you more.

Would also recommend a better CPU cooler, the Freezer 7 Pro is decent, but if you want it to 4Ghz, a better one might be ideal. Perhaps a Noctua or a Tuniq Tower ?

Oh, and also make sure you check the case dimensions etc before buying, so that everything will fit. :)

A 520W Corsair will be more than adequate for that spec, my Dad's PC has been running a 4870, 4 hard drives, 8GB RAM with a quad core on one perfectly.

don't go for a 4850 with the rest of that rig, get a 4870 at least =)

and i agree with getting a noctua if you are clocking the cpu

What? A 4850 uses the same gpu! And these overclock past standard 4870 speeds... Whilst using less power... All for ?100... Its a fine choice :D
an x2? pfft only for monster screens and tech junkies!

The AC7 will be fine for 4ghz 45nm wolffales, oh the thermal pad that comes with it is just as good as paste.

you can get the pro version of that board for the same money in this same site, definitely get the pro over the stock variant of that board. The ATX socket on that board sucks plain and simple, however on the pro upwards it's all good.

I'd get a E8400, cheaper and will clock just as well as the 8500, 4Ghz with ease mate!

I have that nexus PSU in my old PSU, its a solid PSU. However I would still buy a new PSU as your going to need adapters, such as a 24pin ATX adapter, and probably PCI-E adapters unless the graphics card comes with them. Also I am not to sure on its 12v rails as they are only 14 and 15A.
