Hey,

Just picked it up today and noticed that the front element is loose. It doesn't rotate, but I can move it 1/2 mm or so in to the lens and it makes a hollow noise when I tap it:(

Haven't done any tests yet but I assume this is going to throw focus off.

Has anyone had this? How is the front element secured? Do you reckon it's a case of a ring behind it coming loose, or has a whole mechanism slid back in the body of the lens?

And any idea on whether this is going to be a costly fix?!

Not sure about on the f/4 but on most of the L series telephotos the front element is just there for protection and has no real optical qualities. The focus should still therefore still be spot-on.

If the glass is okay you'll just have to pay labour.

If it's got a defect you may have to buy a new element. If it's a protective front element your likley to be looking between £40-£80 + labour.

EDIT: IIRC my friends 600 f/4 cost him about £300 [incl VAT + Labour] for a new front element after the airline company ruined it...
