Any suggestions? I am at a loss in this price range. Not looking for mind blowing quality, but something which will last in terms of technology (shader model versions), and cope decently with games like Total War (crunching power).

Currently looking at:

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Ultimate Silent 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) for £72.84

Leadtek GeForce 8600 GT Extreme 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail - £72.84

PowerColor ATI Radeon X1950 Pro AC2 SILENT 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail - £76.36

Great, and no worries regarding 'future proofing' the blasted Shader Model version (i.e. Shader 4 won't be a requirement for some time to come?)

the x1950 is a good card i have one, how ever if i was buying now i would not get it i would spend about £15-£20 and get an x3850 this is faster and supports shader 4. and there fore more future proof i think in my opinion.
you can get one for £104 ocuk have there own brand at £93 but its on pre order so depends if you in a hurry.

Got it down to these two:

PowerColor X1950Pro AC2 256MB DDR3 256bit PCI-E Graphics Card - £ ~ 65
Sapphire HD 2600XT 256MB GDDR3 DVI HDCP HDTV out PCI-E Graphics Card £ ~ 68

Someone make up my mind :D

As others have stated the 1950 is the best of the bunch you've listed.

However, i'd push to a HD3850 256mb if i were you. Only another £15 on top of your budget and performs quite a bit above the others you've listed! :)

Mine is clocked to 770/999 and gives me similar performance to my old 7950GX2 and 2900XT which in turn perform similarly to the old 8800GTS.
