I thought I'd start a thread as I think it's a topic worth discussing on it's own rather than bogging down other threads.

Apparently £70 is the default price tag for Sony first part games on Playstation 5

Would that put you off buying a game or even possibly a system? Will Nintendo and Microsoft follow in line and jack up their prices? I'd like to think this will reduce the amount of DLC, microtransactions, season passes, expansion packs, loot crates, etc but somehow I doubt it!

I'm feeling like this is going to push people towards subscription services like Microsoft's GamePass. I'm also wondering if this is an attempt to kill off physical sales of games in favour of digital. It'll be interesting to see if digitial copies of games end up cheaper than physical on Sony's PS Store.

For sure it's putting me off buying Demon's Souls on PS5 in favour of waiting for second hand or sales? It would have to be a seriously spectacular game/franchise that I was desperate to have at launch to pay that kind of money personally. I'd go so far as to say it's actually making me question whether I should even buy a Playstation 5?

Are you comfortable paying £70 for a game?

I'm not comfortable paying £40 for a game, so £70 is completely out of the question :p Nail in the coffin for me with PS5. Also the reason why I haven't bought a Switch game for ages.

Pretty much all of the games I play are now through Game Pass, Epic Store freebies, Humble Bundle/Monthly, or are bought cheap a year or so after release.

I wont be purchasing any games for £70, will just wait till they are cheaper.

That said I do see a few games in the 50-60 range, still too much for me and will wait. Expect the Series X games to be similar priced.

How would it be an attempt to kill off physical sales? If anything it would be the opposite because you can buy physical second hand and re-sell it. It's an opportunistic price increase with the new gen consoles, nothing more. They can claim that development costs have increased and most people will be okay with it because of the shiny new graphics and higher frame-rates from their new hardware. It may be true that development costs have increased, but revenue has increased far more due to the growth of the gaming industry.

Sony first party PS5 exclusive titles (Demon's Souls, Godfall) are currently all £70 at most retailers.

I'm also rather irked that $70 has seemingly translated so readily into £70 ?

Yep just noticed, I can’t see them staying at such a high price when most other new games will be around the £50 mark e.g. Assassins Creed and Spider Man

Only £70 if you're one of these people that goes all digital. Personally I'll be sticking to buying and selling my games on disc. And buying the odd game digitally if I see one I want on sale.
The justification that "games cost more to develop" would have been fine IF virtually all games are filled to the brim with micro transactions.

Regarding digital it always seemed like they should be priced lower than physical given the resale value/lost sales and that Sony doesn't have any distribution/delivery costs nor do they have to give resellers a cut. It always seemed like the price equality was simply there to placate resellers to make sure they stock their consoles, peripherals and games.

I agree it seems like nothing more than Sony being opportunistic with the release of a new console. I'm sure increased revenues will massively offset any minor hikes in development costs they have for developing PS5 games.

I'd happily buy at a full price of £70 if the game was of good quality. But alas, quality games are few and far between. Last full priced game i bought was Doom 2016. Resi 2 i bought on sale, but would have been fine with that being £70, it felt like a quality game. I just don't part my cash very easy :p
I think Red Alert on PC cost me ~£60 a long time ago. That had £15 expansion packs i bought separate also.
