Hi!

I am new to the forums and have never build a PC before. I seek guidance on which components to buy in this price range. I want to be able to play Crysis 1, Crysis 2 and Battlefield 3 (when released) on maximum graphics settings at 1920x1080 res (excluding max AA). I would like a system that is fairly future-proof and all bought from Overclockers. Here is a list of my selected components:

"Radon Allosaur" Intel Core i5 2500K 3.30GHz @ 4.40GHz Overclocked Bundle - Asus (£429.98)

MSI GeForce GTX 560Ti Twin FrozR II 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (£175.99)

Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black (£49.99)

Antec High Current Gamer 620W Power Supply (£49.99)

Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD502HJ) (£32.99)

Sony Optiarc AD-5260S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM (£15.98)
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-060-SO&groupid=701&catid=10&subcat=951

Total including VAT: £754.93

Is this a good compatible build? Should I change anything?

Thanks :)

Hi there,

If you are going for an overclocked bundle - I would suggest going with this bundle that includes the gigabyte Z68 board. The ASUS boards have had a few issues and this bundle is £4 cheaper.

I would suggest going for this case instead of the older 300.

The PSU you picked is a nice one and a really good deal, though if you plan on running a second GTX 560 TI in the future then I would suggest going for this 750W one instead.

The rest looks great.

Cool.

Do you think it would be better to buy the components separately, and is the over-clock necessary at this time? I could always do that myself at a later date to prolong the life of it.

I'm not sure if I'd want to go down the sli route because of noise though. How about trying to save money on avoiding a sli board/over-clocked bundles, and buy a better graphics card? Not sure.

Looks very good to me gaz.

Case is largely down to personal preference. Me, I would assemble myself. That said, the bundle will have been tested which reduces the chance of you receiving parts that are DOA (dead on arrival). Troubleshooting doesn't really bother me when building, if u want an "easy" life and there isn't a massive saving, the prebuilt bundle can be "justified".

Good luck with the build however you choose to proceed. Any probs come back to us

Yea, if you buy the parts separately you will save a good bit of money and have full choice over the parts. For gaming an overclock isn't required, but it does unlock a lot of performance (great for CPU hungry games - especially ones that aren't very well threaded) and it is rather easy to do.

I would suggest getting a board at least that supports SLI and CF as you only end up paying £10 extra on the motherboard, on the PSU side you need to pay ~£20 extra to afford that 750W XFX one. IMHO this £30 extra is worth it as it does give you a nice bit of flexibility in the future.

If you are going to buy the CPU/mobo/ram/cooler separately, then I would suggest:

this CPU
this mobo (for no SLI/CF)
this mobo (SLI/CF available)
this RAM
this cooler

Thanks for the advice! I'd like to reduce the chance of dead on arrival as much as possible because I am trying to convince my dad that building a gaming computer has benefits. Hopefully an overclocked pre-selected bundle should reduce the chances as said; fingers crossed. I just hope the GPU works. My last graphics card was a pain in the **** lol. Never buy a multimedia PC and in two years later whip in a cheap, noisy, and overly hot graphics card from Amazon; disaster.

But anyway, so yea. I'll stick with the bundle, and maybe take advantage of the SLI feature in a couple of years time. I'll want to be able to keep one step ahead of the next-next gen consoles of course ;).

Do you think it would be better to get a 750W power supply now so that it is ready for two years down the line SLI, or get the 620W one now and replace it later on? I understand that power supplies degrade. Is this the XFX one you guys are referring to?

Now that sir, is tempting. :)

What is the customer service like for Overclockers? This will be the first time that I have bought from them, and with this many separate components, something is bound to not work. Sods law you see .

I assume CPU overclocking isn't that difficult?

Overclocking is a dream with the 2500k. Just enter the bios, increase the multiplyer and test for stability. If it isn't stable up the voltage a tad. It's that easy. Don't worry about something not working, they will most likely all work perfectly and if it doesn't, just contact OCUK through the webnote service or ring them.
