Hi guys,

I've been asked to put a gaming rig together for my mate. I made him an i5 build but it was about £30 over his budget.

That's what I came up with.

Any other suggestions?

How big is his monitor?

You don't need the Sata cable.

Cheers for the replies guys.

I was thinking about an i5 build for him but for gaming, I honestly think he's going to be better off spending the extra bit of cash on a 5850 considering it's mainly for gaming.

I don't think an i5 with a 5770 would give a better gaming experience than a 5850.

What do you think?

I've got an i5 with a 5770 which runs everything maxed out, mind you, I am playing on a 1280 * 1024 resolution.

There isn't a single chance in hell a AMD + 5850 won't blow away an intel with a 5770, I mean, not a chance in hell.

The key thing you want, is gpu, fit ANYTHING in around the best gpu you can afford.

Personally, I'd grab a 555Be, you have an amazingly high chance of unlocking the core to a quad anyway, save some money and have money left over for a quality cooler.

Even if you stick with a quad I'd certainly buy a nice big but cheap cooler.

Make sure you get a mobo that can unlock cpu cores and you're golden, I'd also consider a last gen chipset mobo, the 7xx boards as they are cheaper and, sata 3 won't the slightest bit of difference unless using a top end ssd which he won't be.

A £80 cpu, a £55-70 760/780 mobo or something, and a £30 cooler and you'll probably end up with a perfectly easy perfectly stable 3.8Ghz quad core for quite a bit less.

I'd also probably swap to a 500W OCZ modular psu, because you're going for a small case and its classed as silent, aswell as getting rid of cables you don't need making it a bit neater. Theres a 500W ocz non modular one for £46 aswell which is more than you need.

Any mobo you buy will have a bunch of sata cables so no need to buy one.

So save money on mobo, chip, psu, buy a cooler, overclock it(overclocked + decent tower cooler will run cooler and faster than with stock cooler as the stock cooler is pants and quite loud). I'd also consider spending a bit extra and grabbing maybe one of the antec 300's, something a little better is likely to come with much higher quality fans, heavier panels that vibrate less and supress more sound and simply a higher quality finish/contruction and its only an extra £10.

Hi Wayne, thanks for the replies.

Looking at the 5830 vs 5850 benchmarks, there are places where the 5850 is actually getting 30 frames more than the 5830, for future proofing I actually think he's better to splash out on a 5850.

I did look at your build as well, I can see where you're coming from about spending the money on parts that you require now and trying to guestimate what will suit you in the future.

Looking at your builds, I don't really see much reason in going for the builds you've listed.

It's pretty similar to the build I posted but you've got the benefit of a nicer case and windows 7. I personally would rather see that extra cash spent on the 5850 being an avid gamer. Also, I know in most situations quad core optimization isn't there but why settle for a Tri when I could get him a quad?

Maybe I've over looked something? I don't know, please enlighten me if so :)

Thanks

Either way, between now and his next upgrade (5/6 years max?) i seriously doubt if there's any game a modern (gaming) card today couldn't run with ease, when you look at the system requirements for something like BFBC2

You don't want a cheap case really. I mean, there are good cheap cases but the case you posted before was just 'cheap' if you get what i mean. If you really want to spend that much then get the CM Elite 335/330 but for £20 more you could get the gladiator, which is really worth it, especially when you've got a relatively high total budget.

The difference between dual and quad today is huge, if of course the program can take advantage of it. But the difference between tri and quad is far smaller... not only that but you do have a chance of unlocking it. I did manage to spec a build with a 6 core in it though so it's your choice.

Alright, cheers for the advice mate.

I'll pass it on to my mate and see what he thinks about it. I actually told him to get a nice case but he was adamant that he wanted the money to go on the insides :)

It got a few decent reviews, but I'll take your word for it.

The xClio Propeller is a midi tower isn't it? I know I'm using a micro board so it won't be much of a problem but they always seem a bit more fiddly to mess about with.
