Hi, What laptop model is worth getting within the £700 mark including VAT+Delivery? Ideally I'd want a Core2 setup with 2GB RAM - would that be feasible? Or if anyone else can spec me one, this would be great... It'll be for doing work and particularly graphic design using Adobe software - so perhaps something with a biggish resolution is needed?

Dell 9400

Core2Duo 1.6
200GB HDD
2GB DDR2 mem
17" Truecolor display. (1900x1200)
ATi X1400 mobility gfx

was £679+del when i looked.

Should be ideal for what you need.

That's excluding VAT. A Dell 9400 costs £920 including VAT+Delivery on my side for similar spec you mentioned above and that's with the standard 17" 1440x900 screen.

I got a Sempron 3000+ processor with an X700 graphics card (advertised as an X600 though) and it still beats a lot of other peoples laptops, but it only cost me £650..!

If you're going to be gaming at all, try and find a lower-power CPU and a higher power graphics card. It's also worth going to laptop-specific forums, they tend to keep up with what's hot and what's not :)

Also, DONT decide against a laptop due to its small amount of ram. As a matter of fact, ignore the fact it has small amount of ram... it's quite often cheaper to get a laptop with less ram then upgrade yourself, than it is to get one with more ram in the first place.

i saved £65 doing that

I placed an order for a Del 9400 with the above specs for £705 inc delivery and vat.

I changed my mind and upgraded to one with a 2.0ghz core2duo, 7900gs gfx card and vista home premium.

That still only cost me £999 inc vat and delivery.

@mightynimrod, that's a pretty good spec and price!

Im chuffed to bits with it :D

Looks-wise it might not be everyones cup of tea but i like it.

I wanted to future-proof it as far as i could with a laptop without going overboard with the price.

Display is great, it's super pi score is faster than my old desktop (overclocked) and i expect it will run my favourite games without issue.

Sub £1k (o.k by £1) is a very good price for what i consider to be a gaming laptop with a great spec.

I just checked out that deal mightynimrod. Do you think this is a good deal?

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5500
80GB HDD
2GB DDR RAM
17" UltraSharp™ Wide Screen WUXGA (1920 x 1200) Display with TrueLife
256MB ATI X1400 graphics card
£665 inc delivery (at this price, are they refurbs?)

I have played with the Inspiron 9400 at work and they are huge (perhaps carrying one about is an issue?). I do like the resolution they do though. I've never owned a laptop so don't really know how to upgrade one, I know it's easy to upgrade a hard drive due to the way laptops are designed nowadays.

I just want one which will last... so I prioritised it by having 2GB ram... is this a wise choice? I also checked out the following:

Zepto Znote 6615WD - it too has a screen which does 1680x1050.
15.4" WSXGA Crystal Clear
Intel Core 2 T5600
2GB RAM
80GB HDD
GeForce 7600

£798...

About 100 squid more but what's the best way forward...??

The 14.1" Zepto is cheaper, smaller and lighter.

14.1" WXGA Crystal Clear
1.83 GHz Intel® Core™2 Duo T5600
2048MB DDR2 667
NVidia Geforce Go 7600 512MB
80GB 5400rpm SATA
SAMSUNG DVD-RW DL
Internal Bluetooth

£701.74

Which Znote model is that based on?

...plus the payment and delivery charges, it's about £760... :(

Are the Inspiron 640m any good? Thinking of that but with the 1440x900 screen?

After postage though they aren't so good lol.

I got this hp laptop just before christmas for £680 delivered. The x1600 is supposed to be quite a bit better than the 7600. Can't find it in stock though now.

HP Compaq nc8430

15.4" WXGA
1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo
1024MB DDR2 667
ATI Mobility X1600 256MB
100GB 5400rpm SATA
DVD-RW DL
Bluetooth
802.11b/g wifi.
