There are still quite a few people that still go for Nvidia (incl myself :D ) just simply for the better plug and play functionality, better stability and some of the newer features like shadowplay. Yes, the prices are at a premium compared to AMD cards, but some would argue that premium is worth paying :)

It's about value and balance. The 770 outperforms the 270 series but not the 280. Handily it sits between the two price wise as well and as such fits well with the specified budget. We could have course compromise heavily on everything; spec a Celeron, small mechanical hard drive, 4gb of RAM to afford a GTX780, but the balance wouldn't be right and he wouldn't see the benefit of the card.

TL/DR - Speccing is a science yo.
