On the road....
As the title,
My sisters partner has a 718 Cayman GTS which he loves, but he wants something more practical as an alternative, performance is still a key requirement.

The main requirement other than keen performance is an ability to carry 3 small ish dogs, isofix child seat, 4 doors rather than 2, able to put a big smile on his face when the need arises….

An Audi RS4 is his current favourite replacement proposition although he was interested to see the prospect of an M3 touring on the horizon…

Tbh, he doesn’t seem to know what he wants, he likes my sisters A35 AMG but finds it too small so I’m guessing a bigger variant from the Merc AMG range could suit?

I’m looking for helpful suggestions toward alternatives to put forward to him.

He’s considering various options from a G30 M5 through to a Panamera, although my sister thinks a 335d touring would most certainly be the more sensible option, frankly, me too!

Personally I think he should just get a V70 T5 and enjoy its 5 cylinder burble, yet strangely he’s not keen…. :p :D

O.C/U.K. suggestions welcome!

Thanks.

A fast German estate is surely the way to go here? Whichever one he likes the look of really.

I suppose the Giulia Quadrifoglio might be worth a look too? Not an estate of course.

C63 estate.
I second this, I sold mine in February but only because the price had gone up by a lot vs. what I paid, I wanted to cash out before thirsty dino juice (lol joke) cars potentially lose value due to fuel rises, and I have been wanting to try a Tesla for a while. I drive to the station at 6am sometimes when I go (or will go) back to the office and a V8 is a bit antisocial. :D

So what is his budget? You've listed cars from about £15k to £100k there. They've not made a 335d touring for years, is he after an older car or a newer one or what?

His last car before the 718 was a C63 although he’s open to another, perhaps….

Budget he hasn’t discussed with me, but, given he bought his current 718 GTS (4.0) outright along with my sisters A35 it’s not a huge issue, he’s not short of a few quid to put it mildly!

The 335d was mentioned because although he likes fast cars, he’s not what I’d have down as a petrol head, he isn’t a particularly fast driver when I’ve been with him and I can’t help thinking the current equivalent of the 335d touring - whatever that is - would arguably be a far more sensible proposition.

He’s all over the shop on his choices , he’s mentioned an X5 M550d in the same sentence as an Aston Rapide V12, he’s trying a G30 M5 soon but would prefer something that can tow a jet ski (the M5 isn’t type approved iirc)

And as I’ve been attacked in the past for such discussions,I’m happy to underline that whilst I do know / am related to some people with an awful lot of money and have some wonderful cars and lifestyle choices,I l, alas, live on a council estate, drive an ages old Volvo and am in more debt than I care to think about! - this isn’t any kind of Willy waving exercise on my part, whatsoever!

Perhaps a 335i Touring? Or even a 435i GC? 530d could be an option. The 4 series isn’t the best with very young kids mind.

Jag XFR-S Sportbrake?

You’ll never achieve the fun of a sports car in something more practical. Sounds to me like they change the A35 to something more his style and keep the 718 for weekend duties. Or split it in two with something boring and practical and a cheaper sports car alongside.

willy waver

I’ve heard you live in a castle surrounded by cases of money and I think you’re just trying to be normal people.

Joking aside, but posting about normal everyday stuff, whatever and whoever determines that, fine. Posting about expensive anything, willy waving.

This. Anything more practical than the 718 is instantly less fun. I miss driving my 981 Cayman and the colossal power of my F90 (not G30) M5 doesn’t really make up for it (too much plod these days).

I needed the practicality, so had to change, but if I was loaded, I would have kept the Cayman for weekends. If you want your cake and eat it, that’s the solution.

I think a Porsche Boxster, Cayman or 911 is always going to be more special than any fast saloon if you enjoy driving. If you measure performance by spreadsheets like many do these days, or even brand perception then perhaps not. Porsche knows better than anyone how to make a great sports car.

If not short of cash or space then keeping the 4.0 GTS would be the preferred option for me! Very special machines which will be few and far between in the coming years.

Anything electric push their buttons? Quite a favourable review of the Kia EV6 on PH today. An EV for the daily grind and a 4.0 GTS for the weekends would be a pretty great combination.
