I have a Mirai 32" HDTV which I bought a while back from OcUk. It's 1366 x 768 Optimum Resolution, so I was wondering if 720p will be the best setting to leave it on or 1080i?

As I undertsand it, which may be completely wrong, the nearer the setting to the native resolution the better the picture will be so 720 is nearer to 768 than 1080. Or am I talking bullocks?

I just use 720p on my Samsung. A lot of games dont look as good after they have been through the PS3s upscaler. If you want to see what i mean try R6: Vegas at 720p then 1080i.

Only games that are noticably better IMO are ones thats are noticably better are GT5 and Ninja Gaiden.

For games that are 720p your PS3 will be sending your screen 1280*720, your screen then upscales to 1366*768.

If you select 1080i your PS3 has to upscale the game to 1920*1080i and then your screen will downscale that down to its native resolution.

Choose the method with the smallest amount of scaling.

I usually use 1080i but it depends on the game. Some look\feel better at 1080i and some at 720p.

Rainbow Six: Vegas looks parp at 1080i for example. But Ninja Gaiden Sigma looks fantastic at 1080i.

ive got the 32" mirai as well and tbh at that size theres no difference at all, its only really matters on much bigger screens.

Depends which method of scaling you prefer, your tv may scale better than the PS3 or vice versa.

It's worth a try with both methods.

I haven't got one yet...have been thinking about it - will have to see what the pay cheque says on Friday.

Please be aware that regardless of what some posters are saying here - the PS3 DOES NOT upscale games and certainly not upto 1080i or 1080p. If a game has a max res of 720p then the PS3 will output that res even if you have 1080i or 1080p selected in the display settings of the PS3. If there's any kind of upscaling going on then it'll be done by your TV.

DVD's & Blu-rays are a different matter.

Always thought it outputted naturally at 720p then anything higher was upscaled by the console?

Nope, if a game outputs 1080i/p then it supports it natively - no upscaling going on at all.

Just tried it out with both Resistance & F1 - both support 720p only and output only 720p on my 1080p lcd.

I set the PS3 I use at 720p and it looked pap compared to 1080i due to all the extra jaggies, then when i rebooted, the console reset itself to 1080i as that was the resolution it thought was the max the tele could handle

I have the same Mirai. I sit about 4-5 feet away.

Best bet is this:

For movies = 1080i (yes interlaced isn't the best but its nowhere near as noticable on film and the extra lines of resolution makes the image sharper)

For games = 720p PROGRESSIVE :D :D :D

You've completely disregarded my post . If your game only supports 720p then that's it !!! the PS3 wont and cant upscale it even if you wanted it to. You can of course scale down to 576p - but only if you are using a crt.

The only way upscaling will take place is if your TV does it, mine doesn't and not many will and if it did - it'll do a very bad job - especially on the cheap sets.
