Hi Guys

Another daft question from me

I have a ViewSonic N3760w HD TV, i have my 360 connected through compnent and it looks amazing, as the title states im a little confused as to which mode i should set it to......

I have noticed a lot of people online preach about 720p being better that 1080i, when i have my 360 set to 1080i the menus and stuff look crystal clear but when i switch to 720p it doesn't look as good so i was wondering if there are any benifits to having it set to 720p?

TIA

As a general rule 720p is better for movies/games and 1080i is better for still images.

At the end of the day, it's all down to personal preference. Some people like it in 1080i, some prefer it in 720p, have a play around, see if you can notice much difference between the two when playing games. Remember the 360 renders everything at 720 (apparently anyway), so that's its native resolution.

1080i will look better if the built-in scaler on the TV is poor. 1080i will look very bad if the descaler in the TV is poor. In essence the quality difference between 1080i and 720p relies on the TV quite heavily - theoretically 720p will be the best on a games console due to a lot of panning and fast moving imagery. Of course a poor scaler with amazing descaler will mean 1080i would look better in practice.

Am myself is trying to work which one looks best on my dell 2405...
But they both mainly look the same to me so far.

Same for me on the 2405, it's really hard to spot any difference.

Have you tried VGA on your 2405 by the way? I find it much better.

Some sets look better in interlace some look better in progressive. Personally on my Panasonic 42inch HDTV I prefer 720p. 1080i looks a little softer to me.

Choose which ever your eyes prefer, neither is technically superior to the other.

Thanks for you comments guys

I had a good look at it last night and sat my wife down to have a look too, i tested it playing the 720p trailer for Narnia first and 1080i looked far better and suprisingly there was quite a big difference, GRAW was equelly as good in 1080i but a little less clear in 720p, so its stick with 1080i me thinks

Thank guys
