Hey guys, my cousin is after a new build. He doesn't need an OS or monitor.

Simply the base unit + parts.

I would probably say he won't be into overclocking, so best bang for his buck without overclocking.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi, sorry if this seems degrading, trust me it's not i just want to give you some advice on speccing compoents.

The core idea of the spec was good but there is major improvment to be made.

CPU: Obvouisly the K is a good choice but retail is the best chip to go for as it comes with another 2 years warranty (3 in total) and a nice little paperweight (stock cooler).

RAM: High profile RAM like this is very much out of fashion, with biug air coolers becoming more popular they can clash so big heatsinks are not adviced. The vengance heatsink is fdor looks not really for OC performance. The cheaper RAM is better value, or its worth getting faster RAM like 2133/2400 as they aree around £65-£75 too..

That PSU, while being 80 plus is a no no really. It is a budget PSU not really suitable for this type of build (overclock/GPU). It's best to stick to well known brands like Corsair/OCZ/seasonic/XFX/silverstone/Antec.. Ect.

Cases are subjective but that case seems pretty cheap and tackey, the Asgard Pro is better value..

It doesn't really need any extra fans and it needs a DVD drive. :D

Like i said i hope you can see this as imformative rather than offensive as that was the way it was intended. :D

No worries; I never say no to some constructive criticism.

Take your point on the warranty (if that's a concern for him), not so much on the added value of the stock cooler.

The high profile is arguably a bit pointless, but it shouldn't clash with the cooler I selected. And I'd say it's more like that heatsink manufacturers will want to move away from designs that impede motherboard functionality.

I didn't use your CX Builder series for the same reason. A better quality PSU would be nice, if he doesn't mind going a bit more over budget.

The case only seems to come with one fan, so it could use another. DVD drives are very optional these days.

Indeed I can :)

It isn't a major concern but it's its only a matter of a few quid (£5ish) it's well worth it in my eyes. The stock cooler also helps if you have to remove your current cooler for any reason, just nice to know you have a back-up. :D

There has been a few deisgns which cater for clearing high profile RAM, like the Archon x2 SB-E (i think).. Though there is a lot of decent (better) RAM going low profile, such as the patriot Viper RAM and the Hyper X series, all great choice which will avoid any clashes..

It seem a bit weird in my eyes to rule yourself out of an amazing air cooler just for the sake of flashy looking RAM..

In my eyes the CX 500W is much better than the 550w crusade, though you're right, id much rather have a OCZ 550W or Akasa Venom 550W. The PSU is the Crux of a rig, as i see it, so getting a good reliable PSU is very important.

Wouldn't have either.
