Okay my friend wants to spend around £750 on a system that will deliver the absolute best gaming performance for that price. He just want the base unit and Windows XP Home. At least a 250gb HD and also a case that will keep everything nice and cool.

Thanks. :)

Here's my first shot at doing someone a spec based around Core2Duo. i7 might be possible on that budget if he goes with wondows 7 RC but I couldn't manage it without skimping in places I wouldn't like to.

Little over budget, if he doesn't intend on overclocking then downgrade the CPU cooler and mobo, otherwise I think it's worth the little extra.

why windows xp home? he really should be looking at a 64bit OS in order the system can actually use all available memory (RAM + gfx) vista is very good now all the initial bugs have been ironed out

I've fallen out of sync with all this computer technology lately tbh.

What is the story with XP and recognising more than 2gb of RAM? He has Vista on his laptop but doesn't like it much.. he's also a fan of playing really old games, will he run in to compatibility errors and what not with Vista?

its not vista vs xp, its 64bit vs 32bit OS's
32 bit can only see about 3.25gig of memory, and thats both gfx and RAM, so with a 1gig gfx card you only get 2.25 gig of RAM
vista does really need 4 gig of RAM to run smoothly, so I dont know why they even sell the 32bit version tbh

Heres a spec for you, you even get £50 change, or you can spend it on upping either case, psu (if he might go xfire in future) or gfx (not really necessary - in fact if he mainly uses old games this is prob overkill)

I get mildly annoyed when someone says "it can only see 3.2Gb"

Win xp is a 32 bit operating system with 32 bit memory addreasing, meaning it can addreas 2^32 bit of memory, this works out to 4Gb total

However, this includes graphics cards memory, buffers in things such as network cards and other assorted odds and sods so you will never see 4Gb of ram

Get a copy of Win 7 RC I find it much better than vista, performance and general "feel"

If your friend is wanting compatability you can install xp as a second operating system

but he should be using a 64 bit )S with 4Gb of memory or more

Personally i'd go for windows 7 64 bit and save a few quid there, or invest it in better graphics options. 95thrifles spec is equally as good personally i'd go for his but i figured i would put out a core 2 quad spec up for variety.

*edit*

Just Realised i've done something dumb, get an ati card with an x48 board to utilise it's crossfire capabilities

Thought I'd have another go, with i7 this time. GPU is a little out of balance with the rest but it will still do for very high graphics settings for a while yet.

Not neccessarily saying I would recommend this over the others but it's worth seeing what you can do in terms of i7 as that will certainly help it stick around for a while
