I am planning a rig with an overclocked i7 920 and 2 5870 cards in crossfire.

A nice corsair 750 sounds like it should do well, but how can I be sure?
"according to ATI the 5870 has a TDP of 188 Watts"
so thats 400 watts for the graphics, plus 200 to be very on the safe side with the i7. Combine that with the mobo, fans, hdds and optical drives - a good qaulity 750W should do the job, but how sure should I be on that?

I would like to get my hands on an antec TruePower but they are out of stock, however I won't be purchasing the parts for a week or two, so I may be in luck.

According to guru3D, 700+W should be ok.

I am only concerned because I was suggested a corsair TX750W for my current machine, q6600 and 2 9800GT cards. Surely I only needed a 500W if even?

Power supplies are often hugely overspecced round here.

I've got a 650W corsair and my rig (750 @ 3.4, 4890 @ stock) on prime and furmark at the same time still only takes 322W (measured).

You could run your proposed rig on a 650W too.

Who suggested that for your current machine? :s

750W should be fine, as you said the 5870's are quite good especially when compared to the Nvidia counterparts..

The motherboard, HDD's and optical drives don't use nearly as much so you'll be fine - it'll be very close to using 600W or so on 100% load I reckon, depending on the amount of add ons and such.

750W should be fine for it, but even if you are worried, or want upgrade-ability, you can always go to 800-850? You never know, you may want add extra things like a watercooling sytem later? :)

My systems an i7, 6gb ram etcc... 5770 and I have an HX750W. Overkill really, but better to be safe than left with a broken pile :p

Just FYI I went for the Antec Truepower 750w in Jan with my single 5870 for the headroom for Crossfire in the future. It should be plenty.
