hi all going to build my kids a comp for xmas and am on a budget and need a gfx card

i have a 6800gs which has 256ram and 256mbit

now i am thinking of getting the 7600gt and this has 256ram but only 128mbit

both are pci-e im just wondering if the 7600gt will give me better performance over my old 6800gs

i did post this somewhere else but just got quite a few fanboy replies to make it clear i cant afford a x1950 or anything like that

both cards are pci-e by the way

thanks guys

I see it as more of a sideways jump than a real increase in performance, LoadsaMoney is right that the 6800gs is similar in performance terms to a 6800gt which equally isn't that much behind a 7600gt so on the back of a rather circular comparison the 6800gs will only be a fairly small amount slower than a 7600gt. If you already have the 6800gs then I'd use that and save up to get a decent jump in performance, if you were talking about a 7900gs/GTO or an X1800XT then I'd be recommending them wholeheartedly but not for a 7600gt. :)

Judging from benchmarks the 7600GT is roughly 10-15% quicker than a 6800GS in most games (the gap closes when higher levels of AA and AF are used).

Considering the prices the 7600GT's can be had (around £90 IIRC) they are excellent value for money.

Agree with above (semi-pro waster), the difference would be rather small. A sideways jump is the words I would use too.

maybe i should look at tryiny to raise 30 quid more then for the 7900gs

just all the posts re 7900 series have put me off

i cant sell the 6800 as it will be going in kids machine for xmas

Even looking at those benchmarks it doesn't seem worth it if you already have the 6800GS. If you were buying either of them then the 7600GT would be the obvious choice but as an upgrade it isn't that great. Wait a while for mid range DX10 or pick up a second hand 7800GT imo.

do pipes unlock on the pci e 6800 gs cards ? worth a try if they do

what stats did the 6800 ultra use to have ? clocks etc

my 6800gs agp runs with all the pipes unlocked fine and i might try overclocking it now i got everything else sorted out

too poor for a new card

6800gs on pci-e is a native 12 pipe card so doesn't unlock

Minstadave has answered whether the 6800gs unlocks or not but the 6800ultra was at 400/1000, the 6800 ultra extreme(rarer than rocking horse defectation ;)) was at 450/1200 and the standard 6800gt was at 350/1000 and all on 16 pipelines. :)

7600gt annihilates the 6800gs in every situation.

I guess it all depends on how you define annihilates, the 7600gt is better but enough to spend a further £90 on, probably not, or at least not when for £120 you could get a card that does actually improve on the 6800gs by a significant degree in the shape of a 7900gs. For most of the resolutions people game at i.e. up to 1280x1024 both the 6800gs and 7600gt remain playable with most games that I have seen.

If someone cares to look through there is a mid-range GPU roundup at Anandtech but there are no doubt more. :)

looks like Marshy deleted my posts to hide the truth..... 7600gt annihilates the 6800gs in every situation.
he deleted your posts because you were sarcastic and rude. As you were in another thread that i'd subscribed to. What's up with you cyber-mav, you're doing it a lot recently :(

anyway back to the cards. the 7900gt is a great option. its very close to x1800xt performance at resolutions up to 1280x1024, only at 1600x1200 it starts loosing ground. but it also puts out far less heat and apparently (i dont know, havent used one) is a very quiet card. The problem, is the apparent failure of the cores like you said - it doesnt fill me with confidence either. if your considering spending 7900gt money the x1800xt is an option, but your sacrificing something with both cards. *** x1800xt is a brute of a card - its loud and hot but does the job well. it was the best value for money card you could buy untill the 7900gt came alone.

the 7600gt performs roughly on par with an x800gto2 and it'll still do reasonable well in most games, especially on a 19" lcd. honestly id say go for that IMO.

Cyber-Mav I never remove posts to hide the truth about the hardware , they were removed due to your constant sarcastic digging toward other members of these forums (as you can clearly see from the reason the posts were removed) , if you persist in this attitude action will be taken & your account suspended, by all means reply with constructive posts but don't make it personal & insulting.

Consider this a final warning

use whatever excuse you want. i know the real reason why you deleted the posts. if they had sarcastic comments in them then you could have censored or removed them. but you got rid of the entire post along with the benchmarks.
can only be one reason for that

Cyber-Mav, you appear to be unneccessarily antagonistic about this. I don't know what you posted before and I'm not bothered one way or the other but it clearly can't be just because benchmarks were posted, if that were so then Marshy would have removed the link from my third post in this thread. This also ignores the fact that Marshy has no possible reason for removing just benchmarks, as far as I am aware he has no vested interest in the scores or relative performance of the cards so to suggest otherwise is a tad spurious.

He's got a good point Mav. I very much doubt Marshy has shares in the, now defunct, 6800gs second hand retailing business. These is no conspiricy by the 'League of 6800gs Villians' to surpress the awful truth that the 7600gt is between 10-20% faster than a 6800gs in most applications.

But then again...... dear god, what if i'm wrong!!!!

lol blimey

right i think i amy have confused a few of you

my 6800gs pci-e is going in my kids machine for xmas this will leave me with no gfx card as i wanted to upgrade anyway

i am only playing prob 3 or 4 games at 1440x900 seemed to be ok with my 6800gs

what i was wondering is with the 7600gt being only 128bit and the 6800gs being 256bit would this pose any probs

i have to get a card regardless and prob only have 100 to spend

basically i dont want a card for my comp that is going to be worse than my 6800gs

In that case: A 7600gt will be a bit better than your old 6800gs. Noticable is some things, not noticable in others. It might just let you turn a bit more eye candy on and maintain the same framerate is some games.
