7600gt overclocking.... getting toasty

Hello again, need to consult your (usually) wise selves.

Just re-installed windows and oh my god its better, much faster games load up instantly... its great.

Decided to wait with really overclocking my leadtek a7600gt till after the re-install and till i had some case fans (previously had a single 80mm rear) I now have the 80mm rear (out), 80mm front (in) and the 120mm side (out). The 120mm really puts out some air and despite being a bit noisey is doing the job alright. If it helps its situated almost directly opposite the cpu.

However, come to overclock the graphics card and its gone from 560/700 to 635/800 but now idles at around 56 degrees and max's out at 68 degrees during far cry. No artifacts and its been running fine... however i'm reluctant to continue with the core with temperatures increasing like thay are. Is 68 degrees too high or acceptable?

What should i look at in terms of cooling? The obvious easiest ways would be drill another hole in the side and whack either an 80mm or another stonking great 120mm in as an intake fan near the graphics card. I also looked at the PCI based exhaust fans but havn't really seen them in action or head of them being used so i was unsure about it.

Alternatively i guess i could fit an aftermarket cooler, but if another intake fan would yield better results i would much prefer to do that as fitting a new coller will invalidate my warranty and the card is only 2 weeks old.

While personally I think its a good idea to run any electronics at 60C max, preferably lower, 68C on a graphics card isn't that unusual and the 7600 should be able to handle it...

If you really want to get it cool - you need a hole in the side panel by the graphics card with atleast a 120mm fan there blowing onto the GPU... I have a side panel with a 250mm fan and it really helps cooling a lot.

Think i might have sorted it myself now anyway, i still had the fan speeds set to no more than 50% in rivatuner :D

Turned them up and its idling and 46degrees, although i had soem artifacts on the desktop in the little background icons in the bottom right corners of the folders, the ones in my music and my videos and stuff.

Had to turn the core down to 608 to make them go away :( Funny, it was running alright otherwise, far cry, steam games and need for speed most wanted were all playing artifact free.

Upping the 3D (core) clock shouldn't affect icons on the desktop... sounds like you may have been upping the 2D clock only (assuming the 7600 series have split clocks like all the othe nVidia cards) :D

I didn't think it should be a problem, but no, the 2d clock is still at 560 and the 3d one is set at 608... everytime i go over 608 on the 3d i get little artifacts on the folders.

Memory is set at 800 for both and stays the same for both all the time.

Restarting the computer seems to have gotten rid of the silly little things. Cores back up to 622 now and they havn't shown up yet... gonna go stress test it with 3dmark05 and see how it holds up.

Idling at 46degrees now.... its looking alright.

Am i rid of those little artifacts now, or can i expect to see them in the future?

depends what caused them - sometimes when I've been testing and clocked too high, I will get artifacts in 2D from the moment the card swaps from 3D mode to 2D at the end of a test and will remain until I reboot...

Sounds rather like what i did. Upped it to 635 from 608 and played far cry.... then they were there.

Okay, temps are now at 46 idle and under 62 degrees under stress, the artifacts don't appear with the core at 625 now so i reckon i'll leave it how it is. 625/800 instead of 560/700 is pretty good going i reckon.

Just a word about temps, my BFG 7600 GT idles at around 40 degrees. I've heard the 'slowdown' temp for these things is 115 degrees by default. If theat's what the manufacturers consider too hot then anything under about 80 shouldn't be a problem at all - although it would crank up system temps...

Yeah the slowdown temp is 115 but i figured thats the gpu's last ditch effort at saving itself before it fries so it bottlenecks its performance in an attempt to keep the card cool.

either way i don't think it'll go any higher... least not without doing something extra to it that i'm not prepared to do just yet.
