7600GT overkill for my system?

Hi all. Trying to decide between a 7600GS and a 7600GT as an upgrade for my Radeon 9600 Pro 128.

System specs are as in sig - would I see a worthy benefit plumping for the GT over the GS given the specs or would the GT be CPU limited such that the GS would be equally as good?

Many thanks. :)

Shouldn't think so - i had an XP3000+ with an x850xt and the performance from even a 9800pro was astonishing!

Either of the 7600's would be great!

I went from a 9600se 128mb (cack) to a 9600xt 256mb (good and played HL2 fairly well too) then got the 9800 pro 128mb which was a big increase!

The x850 was yet another great jump so just get it and see for yourself! :)

depends what you use the PC for and how much you want to spend?

Apologies, should have said. I currently play AOE III, CoD 2, GTA San Andreas, Sith Lords. Haven't bothered with the very latest games purely because of lack of graphical power. I basically want more eye candy for the above and reasonable playability for other current games like HL2. OK, assuming it'll be worth it framerate-wise, I'm just having trouble deciding between the GS and the GT.

I've seen overclocked GS cards that can rival the GT at much lower cost (and less noise). The Palit 'Sonic' 7600GS even has DDR3 memory. Worth considering.

interesting, i'd say you would get close to GT performance then with this card considering it has DDR3.

But either will be major boost in performance over the 9600

Thanks very much all.

Before you'd said that, sr4470, I'd added the Palit 7600GS to the basket in one of OcUK's major competitors (if you can call OcUK competitors to these people) and was just having doubts about whether or not to plump for the better 7600GT.

I could find no reference to this model having GDDR3 but in any case the fact that I can overclock the Palit reasonably well has led me to make the decision and I've ordered it. It only has to last me 6 months until I upgrade in the summer when hopefully DX10, Vista, and DX10 gaming has genuinely struck.

Many thanks again for the help. This forum is the best PC forum I've come across in many ways :)

I had a 7600GS for a little while but it was the Galaxy Zalman one. Was a stonking little card. Had a big cooler on it, GDDR3 memory and overclocked to 620 on the core and 1600 on the mem. This gave a nice boost to over 7600GT performance and cost about £50 (at the time) less. The GS's are just GT cores anyway so i see no reason why the Palit with GDDR3 shouldn't get pretty much the same results (cooler permitting of course).
