Hey all,
Im buying a new PC soon. I was wondering what should i get? One 1900XT or 2 7600GT's in SLi? Both have the same price.
If I go for the SLi, then I have to wait till the nForce 5 mobo's are out(because my processor will be a conroe 6600) If I go for the 1900XT I can order a mobo and other stuff. (not sure about the name, asus PH deluxe) and preorder the processor.

Will a 7600GT SLi Massively own a single 1900XT and it is worth waiting for the nForce 5 mobos??

Regards,

Deva.

I can never understand SLi in mid and low range. Unless you are using two top graphics cards it's just a pure gimmick. For instance a X1900XT will just mop the floor with 2x7600 GTs both in the value and performance departments. It just doesn't make sense.

Agreed, SLI is always going to be beaten by a single higher end card in most situations (and the single card will often be more feature packed, cooler, quieter and cheaper), unless you're a hardcore bencher with two of the top end cards :)

*some games ;)

As dual cores become better optimised for games they will over take the highly clocked single cores.

Im seriously considering flogging my X2 and getting one of the dirt cheap 4000+ single cores. I should get 2.8 - 3.0ghz out of it easily to last me till i get conroe.

Its for people who buy mid ranged systems with one card and further down the line when they need more power they can add a second. Which will still be less than half the price of the high end one. So in effect it does work, just not as a pre-built system.

How are you guys so sure? Can anyone show me their 3DMark06 scores of a 1900XT and 2 7600GTs? Or any other benchmark would be fine :)

Also is it worth buying the 1900XT while DX10 is around the corner?

The only trouble with that is later down the line you have to find a card that exactly matches your original and, with things moving along in graphics as they do, you can't guarantee you will find the same model a lot later. Or you can end up paying a premium because the old ones are not readily available and it ties you into one shop etc.

I can see the point of SLI with high power cards if you have a big hungry monitor (and can afford it) but the point of it with lesser cards (whether at the time or later) is a bit lost I think.

You can mix and match cards from different vendors. It doesnt have to be the exact same card anymore, well, it has be the same model. i.e a GT or GS and what not.
