well basically on my 7600gt, it is set to "auto" in ntune and rivatuner shows this is 66% in 3d mode, 33% in 2d mode. 33% is drowned out by the other noisy fan in my case, but 66% is annoyingly loud. i dont mind it being that loud during games but its annoying when just browsing the internet. basically if a 3d app is opened then closed, the fan stays at 66% rather than drops down to 33%, no matter what the gpu core temp is. sometimes it goes back to 33% after awhile though but usually stays at 66% till i restart the computer. (didnt time exactly how long, but it was a fair amount of time.) if in rivatuner i goto the 2d fan setting, and change it slightly then apply it goes into the proper 2d fan speed. why is it not kicking into 2d fan-speed mode properly? i might just buy a 3rd party cooler (the Zalman VF900-CU looks good) but i would prefer not to spend £25 on a small problem like this.

edit: nvm i assume its normal and its not as bad now for some reason

My 7600GT used to do this too, and I thought it was normal?

After a prolonged gaming session, the fan would be running in 3d mode for a few minutes afterwards, presumably until the temps dropped to somewhere near normal.

What drivers are you running? Have you tried a different set?

I would time how long it actually takes to drop back again, it may seem longer than it actually is.
