Currently running a [email protected] and was thinking of an upgrade. But seeing as I run mainly run iracing which seems to be all about single/double core performance I really dont know which direction to go with an upgrade. 9600k/9700k or maybe 3700x. Nothing is simple nowdays, thanks for any advice. Grafix card is a 2070 by the way......and I currently seem to run everything in VR(Rift S)

Do you mean the game you play doesn't use more than 2 cores? If that is true, there's not much point, because none of those CPUs will do a lot for you when you're nearly 5 Ghz already.

With low threaded games you're not going to see much if any upgrade from any CPU.

If you do want more cores i would sugest a 9700K if it will run in your existing board or if not 3600X / 3700X and a B450 MSI Tomahawk Max.. the 9600K is pointless as its only offering you 2 more threads.

Or if its not causing you any issues just keep it for a while longer, new CPU's from both Intel and AMD in the next 6 months or so.....

Your cpu should be good for 5ghz. This will cost you nothing.

Otherwise I'd go with a 3600x and b450 tomahawk max this should cost you around £250 to upgrade to and for your use be faster than a 3700x which is more expensive.

I reckon you can get around £140 for your current cpu and motherboard so will cost you £110 to do this.

IMO that is your best bet. £110 only and you get 6 cores 12 threads and a cpu just as fast as your current overclocked one if not faster.

I went from a 7600k at stock to 3600x. Was the most cost effective upgrade. So I put my money where my mouth is.

You can then in 6 months time sell the 3600x for £100 and get a 4600x for £200 meaning another £100 for a decent upgrade. Or wait longer and get the 4600x for cheaper.

I wouldn't buy Intel cpu again because amd let you use the socket for 4 generations. Intel it's 1 gen and done.

Therefore if you want to go Intel your only option is the 7700k without a mobo upgrade.

I therefore prefer amd as you get to keep the same mobo for a long time and through several upgrades. Rather than rebuild the whole machine every upgrade. It's far more cost effective and better for the environment.

keep what you have until 4000s amd chips out then upgrade. no point going 3600 probably be slower than your current cpu overclocked in games. or so little difference that you wont notice. also you will have to upgrade twice. just do it once when 4000s out end of year. your cpu will be more than fine till then.

I agree if he can wait 6 month + then it might be worth waiting but as for a 3600 being slower than an overclocked 7600K that's more than a little mad. he might get it to a Ryzen 1600 in this example but that's a very long way from a 3600 which also overclocks. the Min FPS are more than 50% higher on a stock 3600.

hes at 4.7ghz not stock so will be quite a bit quicker. he picks the most biased benchmarks everytime lol.

OP said that the game he mainly plays only cares about 2 cores. The difference in FPS in old games will be minimal, though smoothness might improve if there's a lot of stuff open.

Yes i know and what you quoted has nothing to do with that.

With low threaded games you're not going to see much if any upgrade from any CPU.

Regardless they will improve a lot going from 7600k to 3600x then to 4600x.

I did the same upgrade and I mainly play csgo.

Windows uses a lot of background processes. Plus you can have multiple game launchers loaded up in the background I know I have steam, epic games, origin, discord, faceit, etc.

I saw smoothness and responsiveness improve massively with the upgrade. Even though I only see 25% cpu usage when playing csgo.

The 3600x is a smart play then to 4600x will only cost about £100 after he takes account of what he can sell the 3600x for when it launches.

The only upgrade he can ever do from the 7600k is 7700k. I will never buy an Intel again. Changing motherboard every year is a waste of time and money. I hope amd stay on top and challenge them all the way now.
